Two different renders of my AU versions of Buzzy and Captain Cortex from Cranium Command, one from November 17, 2022 and the other from November 6, 2025. I put the two of them together just to compare how much has changed over time in terms of art style, skill and character design. Though Buzzy has conceptually remained similar, with him having the brown hair and blue eyes that the animatronic had and the more muscular build I give him, he’s visually taller than he is now or in any official artwork. In fact, he was taller than Cortex in early versions of this AU. This didn’t last for long, as a while later, I made him shorter. Other subtle changes include his more reddish hair, freckles in his cheeks, the brown rimmed glasses and the over all colors of his military-esque uniform being a combo of reddish brown for the jacket and an almost lime green for the shirt, pants and hat. Cortex went through more changes. Originally, he was bald, had blue eye shadow and a red jumpsuit with a lot of zippers and two pens in a small pocket in his chest. The only thing that didn’t change were his bottom heavy body type, the white gloves and the dark blue hat with the yellow Cranium Command logo. Currently, he has black hair, an indigo hat, a red-orange jumpsuit with less zippers and pockets, and as mentioned before, the same old white gloves he wears. Other differences within these pieces are the fact that my new style leans towards a traditional Disney movie look, though with a mostly line-less rendering style with soft gradients and rim lights. The earlier one had a fully shaded style, over rendered in some parts. I tended to try to make my stuff look like 3D models, though I wasn’t as skilled, lol. Also, the background was grey on the old one, while the more recent render has a teal background with the Wonders of Life Pavilion pattern.

As much as I hate looking at my first piece featuring my AU versions of Buzzy and Captain Cortex, I thought I’d dig it up, just for fun and to show how far things have progressed. I’ve had the idea for this CC AU for so long, since 2022.

A digital inking and coloring of a sketch of Buzzy from Cranium Command. The sketch in question was originally made by Dave Pruiksma, the artist who designed Buzzy's final look. He is similar to Radar from MASH, though way smaller with less hair, wearing an oversized aviator jacket and a headset.

Thought I'd do something more chill. This isn't the first time I've inked and colored that one Buzzy sketch by Dave Pruiksma, but I did it again anyway to see how far I've come with this specific style. Plus, I just love that particular drawing of him.

Fanart showing my AU versions of Buzzy and Captain Cortex from Cranium Command with picks of the people that they sound like: Radar from MASH and Jason Marsden, a very prominent voice actor in the animation industry. Coincidentally, my designs for them look extremely similar to the ones they sound like. Buzzy was already based on Radar in the original show, and since I gave him the brown hair and blue eyes that the animatronic has, he looks even more like Radar. In Cortex’s case, his resemblance to Jason Marsden is more of a coincidence. I had already given him black hair and brown eyes long before I knew what Jason looked like.

Finally drew something Cranium Command again. This is just a fun way I thought of showing off what I imagine my AU versions of Buzzy and Captain Cortex sound like, Radar from MASH and Jason Marsden, yes just him in general, lol.

An edit of a screenshot from footage of the Captain Cortex animatronic. While the footage itself was upscaled by artificial intelligence, there are certain parts that just didn't look right. As stated in the caption, my edit isn't perfect either and probably has some inaccuracies since there's not a ton of good images of the animatronic when he was still Captain Cortex. The best one that exists did help though, particularly in terms of recapturing some of the actual colors, like the light blue hat, the pink, blue, purple and yellow color scheme of the Cranium Command logo and the orange-ish color of his jumpsuit. Other details I tried to focus on where his hair tufts, his headset, the details on his latex mask and his eyes.

Here's something different: an edit of a Captain Cortex screenshot. While the original footage was upscaled, there's only so much that a computer can do and certain details just get lost or distorted. Though this edit/paint over isn't perfect either, I tried polishing things.

My own take of the Hypothalamus from Cranium Command. who's represented by a robot that consists of a binocular-like head on a pole coming out of a box. He remains mostly the same, just more streamlined and with red wires to make them look more like blood vessels.

Not exactly the first time I've drawn Hypothalamus, but hey, I don't exactly draw him all the time. His design is mostly the same, just more streamlined and his wires are red to look like blood vessels. I wanna lean into the biological aspect of the biomechanical vibe.

My AU designs for Buzzy and Captain Cortex give each other a high five. The art style is mostly line-less with a subtle gradient and a rim light. The background consists of a light teal with a checkered pattern and a pink outline. Both of them are short, with light peach skin, though Buzzy has freckles, blue eyes, and reddish brown hair, while Cortex has no freckles, brown eyes, and black hair. Additionally, Buzzy wears large round glasses. While they’re both brain pilots of a similar rank, they each wear different uniforms. Buzzy has a more military cadet-like look with a green hat and clothes and a brown aviator jacket. Cortex on the other hand wears an orange jumpsuit with white gloves and a blue hat. The only reason why he wears a different outfit is because he doesn’t like the one Buzzy and the rest of the Cranium Commandos wear.

One of my Cranium Command OCs Sunny, an adult female reticulated python. She' an albino jaguar morph retic, so her coloration is mostly white and yellow with some light lavender markings. Two of her distinctive traits is the heart shaped marking near her tail and the fact that most of her tail is missing. Since Sunny is a brain pilot, she wears a blue sweater with name tags on the sides. There's an orange Cranium Command logo on the back, but it's not visible in this piece. She also wears tiny "earbuds" that serve a similar purpose to the human Cranium Commandos' headsets.

I mentioned a while ago that I already had another non-human animal OC for my Cranium Command AU. Here she is! Unlike Gladys, Sunny is a brain pilot, so I gave her a sweater and some ”earbuds” to make that distinction.

A stylized design of a chimpanzee. Unlike a lot of cartoon interpretations, I tried sticking to their actual coloration with mostly black fur throughout the body with a white beard. This chimp is a young adult, so their skin tone is darker. As per usual with the Cranium Command headcanon art, the style is mostly lineless with a subtle gradient and a rim light.

The last non-human animal for my headcanon that I have planned, at least from the ones I drew recently. Of course, how could I forget about our relatives in the animal kingdom, the chimpanzees?

A stylized design of a reticulated python. Though this snake is huge, at least in terms of length, I tried keeping them within reasonable length, around 15-16ft, which still big but not quite clickbaity. Also this animal is based on the retics found in Bali, Indonesia which have a distinctive yellow head. As with the previous designs for this headcanon the art style is mostly line-less, only utilizing lineart for specific details. It also uses subtle gradients and a rim light, though the latter has a chromatic aberration filter to simulate that iridescent look that these pythons are known for.

Another non-human animal for my Cranium Command headcanon, a reticulated python. Picking a species wouldn’t be easy normally, but I heard retics are really smart, so they get some representation. Also, I do have an OC planned, so expect to see her soon.

Several outfits for my headcanon version of Buzzy from Cranium Command. These include the following: Regular uniform: a light green military stile uniform with a reddish-brown aviator jacket, green cadet cap, dark grey ad green headset and dark grey boots. Winter uniform: like the above, but now with brown gloves and fur around the cuffs of the jacket Uniform, but only the green undershirt, pants and boots Casual clothes: A pink vest with long blue denim sleeves, white t-shirt with a rainbow design, blue jeans and white shoes with pink shoelaces. Sleeping clothes: teal pajama set with a cute pink sheep pattern, and light pink slippers. Buzzy is a little person, standing a 3ft 1, with a muscular build. He has reddish brown hair, light peach skin with freckles on his cheeks and blue eyes. Additionally, he wears large round glasses with brown rims.

Bobby from Cranium Command, or at least my headcanon version. There's not much of a difference, although he's a bit taller now since he's supposed to be 16 in the events of this headcanon. He's a blonde light skinned boy with greyish blue eyes. His clothes are similar to what he had in the show, albeit very simplified to avoid cluttering his design. He wears a white button up on top of a long sleeved maroon sweater with baggy caqui jeans with black tennis shoes. He's standing with his hands in his pockets while smiling at the viewer. He's not super shy, but he's definitely a little awkward. The art style is 2D and mostly line-less style, only using lineart where it’s needed, such as areas with shadows. At the top left corner of the screen, there is text saying "Bobby" with the Wicked Mouse font, which was used for the Cranium Command logo.

Yet another attempt at my headcanon Bobby. His previous design is not scrapped. I’ll just leave it as what he looked like during the events of the original show.

Just like the previous drawings, Buzzy’s wearing his green square cap, grey headset, large round glasses, brown aviator jacket, green shirt and pants, and dark grey boots. Cortex is also in uniform, but he prefers a different one, a blue cap, red orange jumpsuit, and white gloves. The only thing that remains consistent are the boots and headset, though the latter is a slightly different design, being silver and dark grey. They’re both also very short with Buzzy being 3ft 1 and Cortex being 3ft 10. Though they have never interacted officially, being just different versions of the same concept, I tend to interpret them not just as separate characters, but as best friends, with a brother-like bond. Cortex being like an older brother and Buzzy a younger brother. Their personalities contrast in the fact that Buzzy is more clumsy and inexperienced, while Cortex is more confident and experienced, but even with their differences, they remain extremely close. The art style is mostly line less, only using lines where needed to enhance details like the mouth or wrinkles. There’s also subtle gradients to give it some shading, as well as a rim light on certain areas like the headsets and hats.

An image featuring all six of the stickers I have made, each a different iteration of Buzzy/Captain Cortex. While all of them are meant to be diminutive in stature, they all differ in terms of their appearance. There’s, of course, Buzzy who wears a more military cadet style green uniform with an oversized brown aviator jacket, green hat, black headset and big round glasses. Unlike most of the other designs, he has tiny black dots for eyes. The second design is a Captain Cortex design by Sue Nichols. He looks very similar to Buzzy in terms of his facial features, but wearing a red orange pilot jumpsuit, white gloves, a blue hat, and a similar headset, though without an antenna. To be clear, the original image does not have actual colors just lineart. I just added the same colors as the audio animatronic based on the Colossal Pictures version. Speaking of which the third one is what the Colossal Pictures version of Cortex looked like. Again, he has a red orange jumpsuit, white gloves, a blue hat and a headset with one antenna in each ear and a mic on the left ear. His face is different with a more bottom heavy structure and more Hannah Barbera style eyes. The fourth is another Cortex design based on the Steve Kirk version. This one has a silver helmet with wings, yellow goggles, and a red suit with white gloves and pants. Overall he has a more gremlin-like appearance. The fifth Cortex design is one featured in the Wonders of Life educational shorts. He is the only one who lacks any sort of military/pilot theming, looking more like a stereotypical 90’s kid, with spicky blonde hair, a green patterned shirt and orange pants. The final design is X. Atencio’s version of the character, who has a yellow and blue uniform with a silver medal and a large blue and yellow helmet that covers half of his eyes.

A nighttime scene of streetlamp in the middle of nowhere near a canyon. Technically speaking, it's underwater, so the colors are mostly blue, with some green hues around the light. Since this takes place in my Cranium Command headcanon, I added Buzzy and Captain Cortex, who are sort of lost. Buzzy's visibly nervous, while Cortex is still confident that a bus might stop by soon.

I felt like drawing a scene with a streetlamp in the middle of nowhere. I also felt like making something with a darker color palette with my Cranium Command headcanon, so here's a nighttime scene that takes place within that world.

My headcanon version of Buzzy from Cranium Command talking to someone offscreen while sitting on a rock in a field full of pink grass and fuchsia coral-like trees. I like to imagine the world of Cranium Commandos as being submerged in cerebrospinal fluid and similar to many underwater environments and that the Cranium Command's various bases are located in more natural areas, so there's a lot of fields where brain pilots can just relax during their time off.

Surprisingly, I never shared the original version of this piece here. I did share one of Buzzy and Captain Cortex in a similar environment though. Nothing much to say here. It's just a chill scene with Buzzy in it.
