Terminated my #Draft2Digital account. I had only a couple of free books there anyway. Went to the Form, selected Other for reason and shortly told them to finish the account. After a few days got a blah-blah reply if I'm certain of my decision. I simply repeated my text and they apparently complied.

I’m taking a rapier.” “Rap—What kind of dress-up party is this?” ## Bookstore changes **TL:DR My ebooks will soon become unavailable to buy, temporarily for the Kobo store and permanently for most other stores. Ebooks on Amazon Kindle will be unaffected. (Feel free to rush off and make some last-minute purchases!)** ## The longer explanation Currently, I use a book publishing service called Draft2Digital (D2D). When I publish a book via D2D, they make that book available in over a dozen stores (Kobo, Apple, Tolino, B&N…). It saves me the hassle of maintaining an account on each store individually. In return, D2D get a cut of my royalties (after Kobo etc take their cut). I don’t get many sales on all these stores (most of my sales come from Kindle, where I publish directly), but it’s nice for readers to have a choice about which store they use. A few days ago, D2D announced they’re going to charge authors an additional fee to keep using their services, unless we make more than $100/year in royalties (after D2D, Kobo etc take their own cut). In a few weeks, they’ll charge me $12 because I didn’t make $100 over the last year, when this charge didn’t even exist. I’m fortunate that $12 isn’t much for me. Writing is a hobby rather than a profession. (So I don’t feel bad about putting far more money in than I get out 😳 ). $12 isn’t much to pay for convenience. However, I’m irritated by low-earning authors being targeted and concerned about future fee increases. So this is my prompt to stop using D2D and publish directly to stores. This move will take some time (weeks? months?). I’ll need to unpublish on D2D before I can (re)publish directly. As I haven’t done this before, there will no doubt be hiccups on the way. So I expect my books will disappear for a bit, other than on the Kindle store. If you already own my books, you should be unaffected since it’s only new sales that will stop. Many other self-published authors are going through this as well, of course. Some will stay with D2D while others will move. Some may give up selling books altogether, which would be a shame. Hope that all makes sense. (And this is all my opinion etc etc). As I've already mentioned, I'm currently sticking with #Draft2Digital because of the ease of use, multiple platforms & the opportunities for discovery & reviews, particularly via promotions, such as on #Smashwords.
However I do think it's fair to have some give as well as take.⚖️

🤔 I'd like #Draft2Digital to review minimum payment thresholds. US authors now risk paying a significant $41.99 to D2D before seeing ANY royalties, while for international authors it's $51.99! $20 setup+$12 annually+$19.99 payment threshold.
💰That's REALLY starting to add up!

I only ever had two books on #draft2digital but it is sure is nice to have zero now.

Don't limit yourself to just Amazon! Consider library aggregators like #Draft2Digital or #PublishDrive to get your book into libraries. More visibility = more potential readers. #LibraryDistribution #SelfPublishing

Well, dang. I get why #draft2digital wants to add account activation fees to defend against the slopstorm, but adding the account maintenance fee is nasty and probably means worse is to come. Unless my books start selling at several times the current rate, I'm going to get dinged. Sigh.

It's obvious the real reason for your "maintenance fee" is that you don't feel the money you make from lower-selling authors is enough to maintain our accounts in terms of server space etc. But instead of being honest about the expense of maintaning such accounts, you fed us a line about the expense of policing for AI slop. If that was really your reason, you'd charge everyong the fee. You're targeting the lowest-earning authors because you want us off your platform, plain and simple. So fine. Bye.

Now that #Draft2Digital has added an "Account Closure Request" option to their dropdown, I sent another request. I think I made my feelings clear, what do you think?

I've got a handful of books available through them, mostly to get onto Smashwords.

The overwhelming majority of my readers are via Kindle, but I'm nervous about ditching it for throwing baby out with the bathwater.
