Museum Plaque: GESTAPO ATTEMPT TO STAMP OUT THE ILLEGAL PRESS In October 1942 a proclamation was issued threatening with the death penalty for the production, distribution or possession of any form of unauthorised printed mat-ter. But never had the Underground Press flourished as vigorously as in the spring and summer of 1943, when its total circulation was estimated at half a million. After long and secret preparations, the Gestapo struck. In November 1943 the largest radio newssheet, “London Nytt", was blown. In February 1944 the Gestapo struck again, uncovering the majority of the most widespread underground papers, and arresting more than 200 people. The damage inflicted was patched up in a relatively short time: in a matter of months clandestine papers were once again in circulation.
