Today marks one month since Alex Pretti was shot and killed in the street by federal agents. I remember the day well. It was just after the march; it was another frigid early morning. Notably (for me) it was Hockey Day Minnesota.
I hoped idealistically that the Wild, my beloved hometown team, would cancel the game scheduled for that night. I knew they would not. I watched the Timberwolves postpone their evening game. I listened to the Wild broadcast vaguely acknowledge unspecified events across the river in Minneapolis during pregame, watched as they didn't even spare a moment's silence after the murder of one of their neighbors. And I will never forget the words they bungled as they segued from their non-statement: "More importantly, back to hockey."
That's how we got here. Indifference. Avoiding difficult truths because they make the wrong people uncomfortable. Taking calls in locker rooms and laughing at jokes that aren't jokes. The US Men's Hockey Team will visit the White House exactly one month after Alex Pretti's murder. Hockey will do as it always does: address nothing, change nothing. It will wait for everyone to forget as the news cycle changes. People will continue to be maced, abducted, and killed in the streets outside the arenas these men skate on, and none of them will care.
But I'm taking it too seriously, aren't I? Because it's 'just sports,' right?

I'm glued to my phone these days which has the effect you'd probably expect.
The bad news machine keeps churning out bad news which I devour, unable to stop the scroll.
I know it's okay to take a break, to rest my eyes, my brain, my nervous system. I know stepping away — just for a moment — isn't selfish.
But I can't.
#iceoutmpls #iceoutcomics 02.06
People keep asking how I'm doing and the answer always feels too small.
I see constant news on my phone, on TV, in the paper. I see streets I know so well; ones I walked and drove everyday for years. Shops and restaurants I've frequented are now opening their doors as makeshift medic stations, recovery bases, bathrooms and kitchens to people in need.
The Cities are not without fault or prejudice or tension, and they never have been. But they're full of neighbors who take that role seriously. People who hold the door for you when you're half a block away are now holding front lines.
Our neighborhoods have gone through chaos before, but this targeted ICE occupation feels different. I'm perpetually worried in a way I haven't been in a while. I'm trying to keep my head up, knowing we outnumber them. We always will.

A 4-panel Comic watercolor + pen, with digital lettering. Panel 1: The panel is split nearly in half-diagonally. Top/Left is in various shades of blue and depicts a Metro Transit Blue Line Train, the train is bisected at the diagonal. Bottom/Right in various shades of gray is a Boston Green Line train. Caption 1 [Typeface is emulates handwriting, above the train]: I read that the light rail to the general strike rally in Minneapolis was so packed some people had to wait for up to four trains to pass before they could board. Caption 2 [Below the train]: A day later, I boarded a Green Line train in Boston to an emergency protest after Alex Pretti's execution. Panel 2: Interior of a Green Line Train, in shades of gray. We're looking straight on at a row of empty seats. Caption: I easily found a seat. I tried listening in to learn if anyone one else was heading to the protest. Shalee and I had been back in Boston for less than a week. We had to keep reminding people that "no, our winter break in Minneapolis was not relaxing." Panel 3: Interior Park Street Station, from the bottom of the stairs, and looking up and out of the station*. It is dark outside. The wide stairwell is empty, and the scene is colored in shades of gray. Four, spiked word balloons travel down the panel originating from outside. The balloons and tails are deteriorated, but they are colored bright blue. The text inside is also blue and blurred. Panel 4: Exterior. Boston Commons. A crowd, in various shades of bright blue, gather in front for the Boston Common Tablet at the NE side of the park. The crowd wears winter gear and holds up (wordless) signs. The background is shades of gray, and the crowd breaks free of the panel borders, bleeding out to the edge of the image. Crowd [Balloons have thick blue outlines, typeface looks like painted letters, words are also a vibrant blue] : WE'RE NOT COLD WE'RE NOT AFRAID! 'MINNE' TAUGHT US TO BE BRAVE! Caption: For the first time in weeks, I cried.

“Hey all, serious note. Be safe out there.” “What’s going on?” “ICE is on campus right now.” We got a text in our architecture school that ICE had been on campus for about a week.
It’s scary seeing this violence being pushed as normal - as if I’m supposed to go on with school without thinking of another person unfairly arrested, kidnapped or shot.
It’s scary having family supporting what ICE has been doing as “the right thing to do” - knowing that most of them were immigrants in a time where assimilation was the expectation.
Everything right now is scary, but I had to do something like put up zones for people to find some certainty in how to defend against ICE. Later that week, most of the zines were gone. I hope no one threw them away.
a more serious comic from me.

Cartoon text opens with, A couple of us are standing on corner watch. Pic shows a guy leaning out of a pickup and asking the two folks standing on the side of the road, What are selling? The narrator asks themselves, What are we selling?
Pic of ICE and CBP agents taking off tactile vests, piling them up, pouring gasoline on the pile. Text reads, I want to yell Redemption! Salvation! Which would be a fine outcome, but...
Cartoon of a large gathering under the trees in a park. Text says, I know selling. I sell paintings so I can paint more paintings. This is not selling... This is STANDING. We stand on corners so more neighbors can stand together.
Cartoon of a neighbors hanging out around a temporary mechanical bull pit. A woman rides the bull, ponytail and left hand waving free. Text says, Because what are redemption and salvation anyway... but a reconnection with community?
We were asked a question earlier this week. I'm not sure if I really answered it, this is just where I wound up.

A comic in black, white, and blue. A giant stomps through a smoking town made of old timey fantasy buildings and blocky office buildings as animal people point and blow whistles. The scene zooms out to reveal a small rat was looking at it through a telescope from far away. Their friends, a rabbit and a fox, come to check on the rat. The fox asks "Any updates from the big city Critters?" and the rat says "Mm..."
The rat hands the telescope to the rabbit, who looks through it to see a giant looming over a house with unhappy faces in the windows, next to a house with unhappy rats in the windows. "Eesh" says the rabbit. The rat says "Mm" again. "That's no good," says the fox. "Mm," the rat agrees, "it looks like a bunch of shops are closed and I can't tell if the shopkeeps are hiding or, y'know."
The rat points to some letters at their feet, and says "My folks sent some letters. They say people are really helping each other out! Real promising community effort!" They continue describing the letters as scenes illustrating the points are shown. "There've been people volunteering to stand guard, lawyers working hard to help, food drives and deliveries for people who can't go out. But," they say as they and their friends are shown watching the smoke on the horizon, "it's hard to see any of that stuff from way out here."
