The door to my heart is what I unlock with it. (Press play and read the rest of the story…) ## Creative Connecting My spouse is not the only thing in my life that I’m grateful for. But she sure is at the top of my list. So much about her inspires me: her energy, creativity, beauty, and loves come to mind as examples. Inspiration is essential to creativity #TPITDR Click To Tweet Though we connected romantically in our fifth decades, I still consider her to be the “love of my life”. None of the relationships before this came close to how loving and connected we are. ## Getting My Gratitude On As you can imagine, this does not mean that everything is always perfect. Life is twisty. We’ve had to deal with our own individual issues along the way. In fact, we’ve each said at various points that relationship will bring up our “stuff” in ways that being alone simply cannot. It is in those imperfect moments, that I must return to my gratitude and the foundations of our love. With those in front of me, I can begin to put the troubling parts of these moments in perspective. In all the ways that can mean. ## Ready or Not A few days ago, I released a new piano improvisation single. You may listen to it wherever you like. Or click the play button below. As you see, the title of this piece is “U Better B Read E”. Obviously, this is a play on words about being ready. In these times, we must be ready to protect the people we love and even help the stranger in need. There are so many who need this protection with the greedy, hate-mongers in power. ## And Now the Geeky Stuff The piano in our dining room is a Kawai. In addition to being a wonderful digital piano, it also has some great technical features. One of those features is an app that loads on my phone or pad called PianoRemote. And now, you can begin to imagine what it does. There’s a bluetooth connection between the piano and the app that allows for many kinds of tweaking. While the ability to tweak the sound of the piano is interesting, there’s another feature that has served me well. ## Ready to Transfer On the Kawai digital piano, I play the improvisation while “recording” it into PianoRemote. Just press the record button and improvise. Stop the recording when I’m done and it prompts me to name the piece. There are several things I can do with the saved pieces. All I have to do is select the triple-dot menu. From there, I can play them back on the digital piano (which is pretty magical); save them to cloud storage (DropBox, etc.); or transfer them to the computer where my DAW recording studio lives. These saves or transfers of the improvisation are in MIDI format, so they are quite small. Once I load these into my DAW, it’s just a few hours of work to get them ready for release. For now, please listen to the 3 tracks in the music videos: * Spellbound (Jaydn, opus 14) – a sometimes fiery video with a (mostly) soft heart * Let It Be (Jaydn, opus 24) – mellow improvisations while the video takes us through forests and between mountains * and now, “The Waterfall” (Jaydn, opus 20) ## The Waterfall If you’ve been dropping by for a while, you’ve already heard stories about this waterfall in our backyard. This water feature is so beautiful. It’s also a reminder of the fragility of nature as it follows droughts and floods. Our little waterfall is a big part of why we choose to live in the farmhouse above it. It lulls us to sleep many nights and is often a place of solace. In short, my spouse and I love “our” waterfall. Obviously, the waterfall behind our home is not ‘ours’ at all. We just call it that out of habit. Click To Tweet ## The Music Video So, it’s no surprise that I’ve featured it in a music video on this album inspired by my spouse. For this particular track, I recorded the waterfall many times and then chose some of the “best” of those sounds as part of the background. Next, I improvised in two separate sessions. In the first session, I created all the melodic, chordal, and random improvisations. In the second session (though I did not play along with the first session), I improvised only the falling lines you hear throughout the piece. Finally, I mixed the two sessions together. You can hear many places where my two sessions don’t perfectly line up. And, for me, this is part of the joy of the improvisational process: imperfection. When I heard that Tom had gone to hospice, I knew that his spouse and he were consciously entering into the end of his life. Memory is sometimes clear and sometimes fuzzy — especially during grief Click To Tweet ## Tom, Friend The well of grief Tom and I met many years ago through InterPlay. I joined the ranks of this organization and way of life mostly through the influence of its founder, Phil Porter. At the time, I was living in Oakland, California. Perhaps I met Tom at one of the International InterPlay Conferences there. One of my vivid memories is of a contact dance workshop that he led at one of those conferences. This is where I also met Tony Hole (from Australia). Tony, Tom, and I did an improvised trio dance during that session which I remember particularly clearly. Grief is a time of deep vulnerability Click To Tweet ## Tom, Mentor After that, Tom and I corresponded on email intermittently over many months. He was a poet. We both appreciated a few poets including David Whyte, so we’d share his poetry along with some of our own original poems. Several times over the years, the two of us would go off for a cup of coffee or tea and chat about our lives. So much of his experience of life and relationships informed me in a very positive way. In fact, my life was transformed more than once because of something Tom instilled in me. How can I remember? How could I have forgotten? Click To Tweet ## Memory Ashes to ashes, dust to dust I’ll be honest: I did not realize how much impact this human being had on my life until he was gone. I interacted with Tom for all of those years. I knew I cared about him and looked up to him. He seemed to reciprocate. But the sheer power of his life in mine was bigger than I had realized. I’m grateful that I knew Tom while he was alive. * * * 1. I first heard this quote from Jeff Altman. In all the ways that can mean. ## Ready or Not A few days ago, I released a new piano improvisation single. You may listen to it wherever you like. Or click the play button below. As you see, the title of this piece is “U Better B Read E”. Obviously, this is a play on words about being ready. In these times, we must be ready to protect the people we love and even help the stranger in need. There are so many who need this protection with the greedy, hate-mongers in power. ## And Now the Geeky Stuff The piano in our dining room is a Kawai. In addition to being a wonderful digital piano, it also has some great technical features. One of those features is an app that loads on my phone or pad called PianoRemote. And now, you can begin to imagine what it does. There’s a bluetooth connection between the piano and the app that allows for many kinds of tweaking. While the ability to tweak the sound of the piano is interesting, there’s another feature that has served me well. ## Ready to Transfer On the Kawai digital piano, I play the improvisation while “recording” it into PianoRemote. Just press the record button and improvise. Stop the recording when I’m done and it prompts me to name the piece. There are several things I can do with the saved pieces. All I have to do is select the triple-dot menu. From there, I can play them back on the digital piano (which is pretty magical); save them to cloud storage (DropBox, etc.); or transfer them to the computer where my DAW recording studio lives. These saves or transfers of the improvisation are in MIDI format, so they are quite small. Once I load these into my DAW, it’s just a few hours of work to get them ready for release. But she sure is at the top of my list. So much about her inspires me: her energy, creativity, beauty, and loves come to mind as examples. Inspiration is essential to creativity #TPITDR Click To Tweet Though we connected romantically in our fifth decades, I still consider her to be the “love of my life”. None of the relationships before this came close to how loving and connected we are. ## Getting My Gratitude On As you can imagine, this does not mean that everything is always perfect. Life is twisty. We’ve had to deal with our own individual issues along the way. In fact, we’ve each said at various points that relationship will bring up our “stuff” in ways that being alone simply cannot. It is in those imperfect moments, that I must return to my gratitude and the foundations of our love. With those in front of me, I can begin to put the troubling parts of these moments in perspective. When I heard that Tom had gone to hospice, I knew that his spouse and he were consciously entering into the end of his life. Memory is sometimes clear and sometimes fuzzy — especially during grief Click To Tweet ## Tom, Friend The well of grief Tom and I met many years ago through InterPlay. I joined the ranks of this organization and way of life mostly through the influence of its founder, Phil Porter. At the time, I was living in Oakland, California. Perhaps I met Tom at one of the International InterPlay Conferences there. One of my vivid memories is of a contact dance workshop that he led at one of those conferences. This is where I also met Tony Hole (from Australia). Tony, Tom, and I did an improvised trio dance during that session which I remember particularly clearly. Grief is a time of deep vulnerability Click To Tweet ## Tom, Mentor After that, Tom and I corresponded on email intermittently over many months. He was a poet. We both appreciated a few poets including David Whyte, so we’d share his poetry along with some of our own original poems. Several times over the years, the two of us would go off for a cup of coffee or tea and chat about our lives. So much of his experience of life and relationships informed me in a very positive way. In fact, my life was transformed more than once because of something Tom instilled in me. How can I remember? How could I have forgotten? I interacted with Tom for all of those years. I knew I cared about him and looked up to him. He seemed to reciprocate. But the sheer power of his life in mine was bigger than I had realized.
