A tiled compilation of Solaris book covers designed by freelancers!

As #NationalIllustrationDay draws to a close, time for one last post...

We know they say not to judge by its cover, but we all do.

The art a book is wrapped in is often as important as the words inside to the reader, thank you to all the freelance designers who help shape our books' identity!

Today is #nationalillustrationday, so shout out to illustrators everywhere.

Like these whimsical sketches from Arthur Rackham, known for how he envisioned many of our folktales.

Botanical illustration of a Strelitzia or 'Bird of Paradise' sensitively painted to show the horizontal green and pink bract from which emerge flowers of striking orange and blue. The plant is chopped at the stem and a dissection of part of the flower is shown in the lower right.

For #NationalIllustrationDay, we're spoilt for choice by the illustrations we could post!

We've settled on this hand-coloured lithograph of Strelitzia reginae by Francis Bauer who was employed as first resident botanical at Kew in 1790 with the grand title of ‘Botanick Painter to His Majesty’.

This #NationalIllustrationDay, we'd particularly like to thank our in-house designers Sam Gretton and @petitecreme.bsky.social / Gem Sheldrake.

Without them you wouldn't have Gem's striking designs across @aptshadow.bsky.social 's TERRIBLE WORLDS novellas or a whole range of 'Sam Specials'!

When I say “I write children’s stories”…the first question is always: ‘Do you illustrate them too?’
Nope. With my skills I’d probably draw a straight line trying to illustrate a circle 🫣

In total awe of illustrators…
#kidlit is all the brighter because of you! 🥳🤗🥳

A poster which has a yellow background and black silhouettes of a detective and a young girl in the 1920s. There is a sihouette of Kings College Cambridge in the background, lots of smoke and giant grey tentacles coming out of the college.

Today is National Illustration Day, so what better day than to show this, which is the poster image for our next show (January 14-17, Corpus Playroom, Cambridge).

Informative, beautiful and deeply human: it’s time to cheer the underrated art of illustration | Oliver Jeffers We do judge books by their covers. Illustrations spark young imaginations, solve problems, present information - and shape our world, says the children’s author on National Illustration Day

Painting of a tree with a grey trunk and leaves of green, red, purple and orange. Next to the tree is a poem: 'Pheasants feathers of amethyst, Magenta, crimson, burnt sienna & brown, Leaf the maple's branches with a mauve mantle, As it stands sentinel to the undying Fall.' Ronald Duncan's signature and the date '9 Sept - 77' are noted in the bottom right hand corner.

Good morning to everyone, but especially to all the trees, for this is their special week! 🌲

One of our favourite trees in the collections is this vibrant illustration (and poem!) by the writer and poet, Ronald Duncan.
