Nanako moves to stand next to her sister, bumping their shoulders together. “What kinds of animals live here?” Satoru has noticed that Nanako likes attention, and isn’t too shy to ask for it. Suguru tends to indulge her, probably because Mimiko is more comfortable staying out of the spotlight. “Good question, Nanako. I know that mamushi does. Do you know what that is?” “A snake.” “That’s right. But it’s winter, so we probably won’t see any.” There’s something in Suguru’s voice that makes Satoru’s hair stand on end. He grins in anticipation and, on a hunch, focuses on the ground at Nanako’s feet. Something long and cursed slithers out of a bunch of ferns and creeps towards the girls. Nanako shrieks, jumping back. Mimiko drops to her knees, Baby squeezed to her chest, face so close to the curse that, if it were a snake, Satoru would be seriously worried. “It’s cute,” Mimiko declares. Nanako, meanwhile, is yowling in betrayal. She runs into Suguru’s leg and jerks at his jacket with both hands. “No fair! I wasn’t ready!” “That was the point, Nanako.” Suguru’s hand moves over her hair, patting gently. “You did well. If you see a snake, you should move away. Mimiko, snakes can be dangerous. When they bite…”
Satoru tunes out the rest of their conversation, snickering under his breath, feeling lighter than before. He’s always enjoyed it when people let him tag along and observe. He can be the centre of attention, but this is nice, too, feeling no pressure to perform or contribute. He’s just here, belonging, wanted, but not needed. His next inhale is sharp, cold air choking him up a little. He’s allowed to want this, surely. Wanting things doesn’t mean he’ll get them, so it’s fine. When the girls run off ahead to look for pretty lichen--a very cool lifeform; Satoru’s proud of Suguru for acknowledging this--Suguru slows his steps until Satoru’s caught up with him. “Enjoying yourself?” Satoru hums, like he needs to think about it, tilting his head and squeezing his cheeks between two fingers. “I guess. It’s not the worst field trip I’ve ever been on.” Suguru’s bark of laughter is loud and sudden. “Oh, I know. I was there with you during some of the worst ones.” He’s talking about their early missions together, which technically count as training, and therefore fall under the term ‘field trip’. They were so stupid back then, butting heads just to do it, pushing each other to see how far the other would go while retaliating, but Satoru recalls all those moments fondly. He’d gladly go back to that over feeling like there’s an insurmountable wall between him and Suguru.
i'm thinking of going back to working on pathways once i'm done editing love notes. the fic is very domestic and i could probably handle posting it as i write, which is something i've wanted to try for a while now
