No expert on the machinations of jury trials but plainly the proposed changes are, wilfully or otherwise, a threat to civil liberties - particularly under cynical, authoritarian govts. Plus it sounds like the changes *won’t cut* the backlog.

A fear of mine is that this would be used to target protesters. It would be a lot easier to get guilty in terms of Palestine Action and other protest groups by judge trial than jury.
