Without knowing much about the Artemis program, I turned the radio on just after they lifted off. I find space fascinating and scary in equal measure but thought we needed some books to celebrate in the school library. I hope these will inspire future scientists! #KidLitUK #UKKidLit

My hand holding a copy of We Do Not Welcome Our Ten-Year-Old Overlord,by Garth Nix. The cover illustration shows a young girl holding a glowing ball. She looks fierce. And greenish.

Kim’s precocious younger sister Eila is already pretty unbearable, being bossy and always right. When she finds an alien in the form of a ball, she decides to befriend it and work with its amazing powers. Together, they can improve people’s lives. But Kim doesn’t trusttje alien…

Why I liked it: the characters are so well drawn, the story itself is exciting and compelling while not being overly fast. It’s a little out of the ordinary. And it covers interesting moral questions with a light touch.

4 picture books laid on the floor in a square:
Chitra Soundar & Sandhya Prabhat's It's Time To Hush and Say Goodnight (a flowing, dreamlike cover featuring an Indian dad and his son cuddling.)
The Worst Princess by Anna Kemp and Sara Ogilvie (with a princess riding on a mid-air dragon, who is smiling at her.)
Look Up by Dapo Adeola and Nathan Bryon, showing a small Black girl wearing a bright orange space suit looking up and smiling widely at the night sky.
And Beegu by the sublime Alexis Deacon, showing a painterly cityscape with a small orange alien creature at the front, with long ears that trail to the floor. The atmosphere of the piece is a little mournful.
