Chemistry courses _are_used as weed out courses. Not by us (Chem profs), but by others. If we move to pass/fail or (even better) no grades at all, we will dismantle their perverse system of incentives and be able to focus an learning instead! #ungrading
My past students are #ungrading too ❤️✌🏼🙌
This article explores how CC faculty experience the transition to #altgrading approaches (contract grading, #ungrading, #specsgrading.
Lots of interest BUT implementation is often constrained by affective barriers, structural challenges, & gaps in leadership/collaboration.
The figures for those same years for women in college were 46.2% and 11.4% and for men they were 42.9% and 16.6%.

I’ve gone back to traditional grades (where everything averages & categories are weighted) now that we’ve stared a new semester with new classes. I’m not too happy about it, but students are already more attentive to work. It’s early, we’ll see. My gradeless ( #ungrading ) project may be at an end…
Removing grades ≠ student agency. Freedom without structure just creates anxiety. This semester, I’m trying #Ungrading 2.0: From performance → process From compliance → authorship Ungrading 1.0 removed obstacles. Ungrading 2.0 builds better roads. https://wiobyrne.com/ungrading-and-labor-agency/

After a few semesters of living under the "cloud" of AI, here's where I think I have landed...?

Anyone else have a lot of anxiety *after* posting grades?
This semester, I had one of those classes where I just didn’t really feel like we connected, and I was not in a great place, either. Their grades showed it. I curved them up accordingly.
Still anxious they’ll complain.

This thread got messed up. #ungrading.
Anyway, there are lots of ways to evaluate learning that don’t involve grades and you should look into it. AI is going to dog you until you get interested in authentic engagement from your students and stop relying on those tests you made up 10 years ago.
Over and over, I've seen students choose AI over effort - not bc they don't care, but bc they're anxious about delivering "correct" results. #Ungrading has helped bridge the gap, restore trust, and cultivate human connection and authenticity in my classes, making them AI-impervious. Mostly. (2/2)
Day 4 of 5 for #ungrading interviews for first-year portfolios and for third-year learning letters, and wow, that’s exhausting work for a serious introvert. But there was also joy and opportunities for connection, and it still beats sitting alone in my office grading. (But now there is wine.)
My Archaeology and Disability 🏺♿ course starts on 1/5, but I'm traveling with my family 12/17–1/2, so I am getting everything ready now! I'm really excited about the grading (or, really, #ungrading) structure of the course, which gives students a lot of freedom, choice, and room for risk-taking! 🧵
My autocorrect just changed #ungrading to "ungrudging," and honestly? Yes.
Confession: I am losing steam on #ungrading. I’m sold on student reflection, but grade pitches & negotiating grades based on evidence isn’t working as it did years ago. My Ss seem to respond to immediate letter/number grades with more clarity even though I disagree with that #assessment philosophy.
Without grades, institutions will have to spend more time considering candidates who apply to their programmes, and the same holds true for employers — but the result will be worth it. We will have to see the individuals who apply, and consider their individual suitability for the programme / […]

Is your instrument really accurate to 0.01 or even 0.25? What exactly are you assessing? Does that student's learning improve with gettting 13.25/14 instead of 2275%? #ungrading for the win :)
I am very much on board for #Ungrading but I retain some concerns about how we *know* that it is reducing harm. It works for me, but there are a number of confounding variables that could explain the harm reduction. How can we know if the grading policy is better? #AcademicSky
I’ve been shifting from quarterly grade pitches to holistic weekly grade assignments based off of a course rubric (similar to contract-based grading). It’s an ever-evolving process to help students reflect and get a gauge on their progress. #ungrading #assessment
Absolument.

Does anyone know of a meta-analysis of ungrading research? #ungrading
This is a popular study for the proponents of #ungrading because it puts a number to the effects of grades on learning. There is something persuasive in the data that shows numbers get higher when task-oriented feedback is provided. Hard to argue with bigger numbers.
If the hypothesis of the study is that #ungrading is going to be beneficial for the students' learning, those who were randomly assigned into the control group would be expected not to learn as much. That would seem to raise some ethical questions, especially if the study was done in the classroom.
These qualifications aside, this is what I think the proponents of #ungrading need to be doing: finding ways to collect quantitive and qualitative data on what the students learning. Compare the pre- and post-test data with reflections the students and written and course evaluations.
In thinking through what sort of evidence might help alleviate my concerns that #ungrading models aren't just refurbished versions of existing assessment practices--that, instead, they actually improve learning in the classroom--I came across this essay by Horace Crogman, et al.

Excited to celebrate Kellogg Faculty Fellow @susandblum.bsky.social for her national recognition in The Chronicle of Higher Education! Her work on 'ungrading' is transforming how teachers think about student learning. Congrats, Susan! 👏 #KelloggInstitute #Ungrading #HigherEd

The always-insightful reporter Beckie Supiano saw my free ebook about Ungrading Five Years On and we had a great conversation about the current status of #ungrading, including in the context of #AI.

In times of AI, removing grades would not only tackle the 'fairness' issue but also would make students realise that the only thing remaining to achieve in their 'transactional education' is knowledge (which therefore might discourage them to mindlessly use AI).
