University of Utah scientists have made a discovery that could help battle Great Salt Lake dust A recent scientific find by University of Utah researchers could help combat the problem of toxic dust blowing off the exposed Great Salt Lake bed.

Let's be clear: this is preliminary and we still don't know the extent of the underground reservoir. Utah's Dept. of Natural Resources helped fund the @utah.edu study and more needs to be done in other parts of the lake: www.fox13now.com/news/great-s... #utpol #Utah

Why one store owner is 'glad' Utah didn't further restrict SNAP purchases Clayton Cook's discount store had to pay for programming which determines if a food can be purchased with SNAP benefits. He said this year, he's relieved SNAP restrictions didn't go further.

Utah lawmakers recently considered prohibiting food stamps from being used to buy "ultra-processed foods." It didn't end up happening, which one store owner says is a good thing. But the issue could resurface later www.ksl.com/article/why-... #utpol @ksl.com

Mayor says ICE is planning ‘mega center’ with capacity for 10,000 at Salt Lake City warehouse • Utah News Dispatch Mayor Erin Mendenhall was told ICE is planning to put one of its “mega” detention centers in Salt Lake City, with capacity for 10,000 people.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said that during a meeting she had with federal officials last week, she was told ICE plans for Salt Lake City to host one of its “mega” detention centers, with capacity for about 7,500 to 10,000 people. #utpol

Mayor Mendenhall releases statement following meeting with ICE officials

“I spoke with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Deputy Director Charles Wall and Deputy Chief of Staff to the Director Tim Kaiser during a 30-minute virtual, introductory meeting last week.

I was told ICE plans for Salt Lake City to host one of its ‘mega centers,’ with capacity for approximately 7,500 to 10,000 individuals. It would represent a hub in the ‘hub and spoke’ model. They indicated they are waiting for a due diligence report on their recently acquired parcel of land and that the information would be shared with City officials. They expect work to begin on the site in the weeks and months ahead.

I asked if they plan to coordinate with Salt Lake City regarding changes to the building and ‘life and safety’ measures the City typically enforces through building codes. They said they plan to consult our fire marshal on these issues, but did not commit to any other City review on the building. They did not provide information about the anticipated environmental and traffic impacts to the area, nor did they have specific information on utility needs for the site.

My position on this facility has not changed. I continue to share the deep concerns of many of our neighbors related to public safety, air quality, and potential impacts to the Great Salt Lake due to increased water use. I have heard from neighboring business operators who understandably have serious questions about the strain such a facility would have in the area. I will continue to be transparent with you about the facts of this situation as I learn them.”

This Pat Bagley cartoon is featured in today’s Salt Lake Tribune. Titled, “Lesson not learned”.

A single panel featuring Bagley’s signature Utah politician: white male, blue suit, red tie, white shirt.

Represented in seven different emotions, the politician at the center holds a newspaper with the headline, “Out-of-state funded legislative initiative fails!”

Tantrum on the floor, pulling out his hair, stomping in anger, even a faint, Bagley’s drawing relays the recent news that the state legislators’ effort to repeal prop 4 fails to make the ballot in the upcoming election.

The project could generate as much economic impact as Hill Air Force Base does, Gov. Cox says. Tooele County’s council has already given support to the proposed project. We are about an hour away from SLC in the West Desert. #utpol #Utah
