Mourning the Cost of Trump's War(s) of Choice (Fairfield) · Mobilize Every Thursday, from 4-5pm, Indivisible Mid Maine hosts a pro-democracy sign protest on Main St. in Fairfield, near the bridge to Benton. On Thursday, April 16, we will begin our regular weekly protest a half hour early, at 3:30, so we can come together and express our grief and disgust in connection with the trump regime's use of tens of billions of dollars to fight a war of choice in the Middle East, when that money could be used to feed, house, educate, and otherwise "provide for the general welfare," as the US Constitution demands. Please note: some analysts estimate that the US-Israeli war in the Middle East has already cost over $30 billion. Imagine how much that same amount of money could have done in support of SNAP, Medicaid, public education, supportive public housing, addiction and mental health counseling, etc.! And of course, we mourn the enormous, unforgivable cost in human lives as well! On April 16, we will gather at 3:30pm at the Fairfield Community Center (parking is abundant there), dressed in black if possible, carrying signs (coffin shaped signs are good!) representing the terrible cost of trump's war on Iran and beyond, and what that money could be used for instead to support and protect our communities. Contracts for detention facilities are under review. Major infrastructure projects have been paused or redirected. The public face of enforcement has softened, but the underlying system remains large and active. Arrest numbers are still high, yet the confrontational edge has eased. In major cities, residents report fewer uniformed officers in public spaces. Some federal agents have been pulled back from urban deployments, even as operations continue out of sight. These adjustments are layered on top of an enforcement apparatus that expanded significantly during Noem's tenure, leaving a far more robust baseline than before. New regional guidance instructs officers to focus on individuals with criminal charges or convictions and to avoid engaging with protesters, a tactical shift meant to lower tensions.
