A double headed saffron crocus with light purple petals with even lighter purple or even whitish stripes that go up each petal like an ostrich plume or a fountain or some Art Nouveau type of design. In the center of each can be seen the yellow pollen covered stamens, and at least one each of the orange red stigmas, the saffron spice filaments. In the flower on the right, there are two pollen covered bees! One is sticking its head out and the other is sitting on one of the pedals starting to crawl inside

Looking straight down on two and a half light purple saffron crocus, their yellow pollen-covered stamens and reddish-orange saffron filaments sticking straight up. The one to the upper right has a pollen-coated bee in it.
Closeup of a double blooming saffron crocus - the petals sticking straight up where the two flowers nestle together; the one on the left has its other petals wide open, and the one on the right was not fully open, but.... there are TWO pollen-coated bees in it! One is sticking its head out from amongst the pollen-coated stamens, and the other is on one of the petals, facing down into the flower. This one has a huge pollen sac visible on its back leg.
Closeup POV looking through some hexagonal chicken wire fencing to two light purple saffron crocuses. Both have three yellow pollen-covered stamens and three reddish-orange saffron filaments sticking straight out. The one on the left has a very happy pollen-covered bee in it.
The saffron is making the bees VERY happy!

A square raised garden bed lined with chicken wire mesh and filled with dirt. About three dozen light purple crocus blossoms in varying stages of opening stand out against the soil. A little more difficult to see are all of the tufts of dark green grass-like leaves. The chicken wire mesh top is pulled back and up, exposing most of the bed.
Closeup of two light purple flowers with soft white stripes in a pattern reminiscent of a fountain or an ostrich plume as they spread out toward the outer edges of the petals. From the dark purple center of each are sprouting three pollen-covered stamens and reddish orange filaments of the saffron spice (the latter of which has slide in between petals, so the threads are hidden, poking out from below, and just in general hiding. Some of the dark green grass-like leaves spray out from below them. At the bottom, some of the chicken wire mesh lining is sticking up.

A square-shaped raised garden bed full of soil, with a couple dozen light purple crocus blossoms scattered throughout. There are also multiple tufts of dark green grass-like leaves. The chicken wire cover is pulled back and away. I'm finding it interesting how varied the stages of bloom are for the flowers before they decide they're done. Some look barely open, but start to wilt after a day. Some last for a few days, and just keep spreading wider and wider!
Closeup of a light purple saffron crocus. Its inverted teardrop-shaped petals have white patterns on them that remind one of a fountain or an ostrich plume - widening out as they move toward the tips. In the darker purple center, three yellow pollen-covered stamens and three longer reddish orange saffron filaments burst out of the flower like... idunno, some weird space alien giving you a jump scare! A spray of dark green grass-like leaves (each with a thin white stripe down the centerline) frame the blossom like a starburst from behind. And, behind THAT, there are several more tufts of leaves just starting to spread out of their protective sheaths.
A slightly out of focus extreme closeup of a light purple saffron flower with plume-like art nouveau stripes emerging from the narrow bases of the petals and spreading out at the outer edges. There are some dark green grass-like leaves (each with a single white stripe down its midline) next to the flower and poking out from behind/underneath it. In the center of the flower are three yellow curly pollen-covered stamens and one visible, longer reddish orange saffron filament (with some yellow pollen dusting the frilly end) stick out. There are little bits of yellow pollen dusting a couple of the petals. And... in the center, slightly on top of the stamens, there is a BEE sleeping face down into the fluted center of the blossom!!!
Today's harvest - on the right, a clear plastic tray (meant to be put under a flower pot) filled with plucked light purple crocus blooms. Some are looking rather tatty. [These will be dried and added to tea!!!] On the left, a white paper towel with today's haul of saffron - a small pile of reddish-orange filaments about 2x3cm. To the left of that, yesterday's saffron harvest. Its filaments are darker red, and MUCH thinner and smaller than the freshly plucked ones.

Closeup of a light purple saffron crocus with art nouveau-esque patterned stripes on the petals. From the darker purple center, three yellow pollen-covered stamens and three long golden red saffron filaments pop out. The pollen is smudged on the insides of the petals, and on the frilly tips of the saffron filaments. Several dark green grass-like leaves with single white stripes down their centers spray out from below the blossom.

POV looking down at a light purple saffron crocus, with white stripes going up the petals that begin close together at the base, and spread out in a fountain or ostrich plume kind of way as the petal gets wider. There are three yellow pollen-covered stamens in the center, and three orange-red filaments of saffron spice draped out of the middle. A bunch of dark green grass-like leaves are all around it, and a little bit of the chicken wire is visible on the left.
On a white paper towel, a small pile of about 8 spent light purple crocus flowers, petals askew. At their 6:00 is a pile of vibrant golden-red spice filaments - barely visible at the base, and slightly wider at the other end - which is frilly.
I had a pretty good saffron harvest, today. More blooms popping out each day! :D

Looking through one of the hexagonal holes in a metal chicken wire mesh - a side-view of a light purple saffron crocus. The open blossom is leaning toward (and is illuminated by) the sun, its three orange-red filaments standing straight out from the center - not leaning on the petals, at all. Coming out of the base of the plant are more green grass-like leaves and another light purple bud!
And, the saffron update - more blooms, today, all enjoying the sunshine!

Closeup of some freshly plucked orange saffron filaments on a white paper towel. They're slightly fluted - hair-thin at the lower end, and slightly wider and frilly at the top.
Closeup of two fresh orange saffron filaments, with the frilly fluted ends close to us - pointing to 6:00 and 7:00-ish.
A white paper towel with a pile of about a dozen and a half freshly plucked orange saffron filaments. Some are distinctly showing their hair-thin lower tip and the ever so slightly wider frilly top ends. Above this pile in the photo is a pile of dark red dried saffron filaments. They look very thin and delicate. This really demonstrates how very little actual spice you get out of these flowers... and thus why saffron is the most expensive spice (by weight) on the planet. On the left side is a pile of spent light purple saffron crocus flowers, their fancy patterned petals going in multiple directions. A couple show their yellow pollen-covered stamens, as well.
BEHOLD, my bountiful harvest!
I put the ones from the other day out to show how TINY they get. Seriously, this is exactly the reason why saffron spice is the most expensive spice on Earth.
Also, the blossoms are great in tea!

POV looking from above into a raised garden bed with hexagonal chicken wire mesh draped over it. Through the mesh, we can see about a dozen and a half light purple flowers and several dozen dark green tufts of grass-like leaves. I keep finding holes dug in the yard, so I do NOT trust that the squirrels won't mess with my babies! I don't have the cover all laced up, but hopefully the furry little jerks will have spent the past few weeks not being able to get in and therefore ignoring it. The plants are still seeming to bloom in clusters, and I know I spaced them out appropriately, so maybe some of the corms are just doubling up?
POV looking at the right half of the bed below the chicken wire mesh, where we can see two rows of blooming light purple crocus flowers. Some are not very open, some are wide open, and a couple are falling apart. There are even more tufts of dark green grass-like leaves than there are tufts with blossoms. In the lower-ish right, one saffron crocus blossom is facing us, its petals splayed wide open like a daisy or something. Visible from the center fluted part of the flower are three yellow pollen-covered stamens, and at least one visible darker golden orange filament (the saffron spice!)
Happy Saffron Crocus is happy to see us! This is a closeup of that wide-open flower from the previous image. The six teardrop-shaped petals are spread wide open, and we can see the pale white lines against the light purple. The stripes start close together in the darker center of the flower where they all join the center... and then spread out toward the top edges of the petals, looking like an art nouveau design, or a fountain, or an ostrich plume. These petals are so darned pretty! Three golden orange filaments of saffron spice are hanging out of the center, drooping down over the lower petals like a dog's tongue or something. From here, we can see that the part where they attach to the plant are narrower, and the other ends have frilly edges.
You cannot contain me!!!! POV - overhead closeup of another saffron blossom opening up and looking like it's ready to bust through the chicken wire. Its petal motifs are more distinct, as the petals are closer together. Coming out of the darker center, fluted part of the flower are three yellow pollen-covered stamens, and three golden orange saffron filaments. Two of them are sticking kind of straight up and out, draping gently against the petals at 3:00 and 9:00. The third filament is sticking down from between the petals at 6:00 and 7:00. We can see the thin part coming out of the center, and then the frilly edge sticking out from below.

Ground-level POV in a garden bed with a bunch of little clusters of dark green grass-like leaves. At the center top (back of the bed) there are two light purple crocus blossoms with dark golden-orange filaments poking out of their centers. The chicken-wire mesh cover is visible overhead.
Overhead POV through some chicken-wire mesh of two light purple blossoms with lighter purple stripes going lengthwise down each petal, making kind of an Art Nouveau look. In the center of each, there are three yellow pollen-coated stamens, as well as three long flat golden orange filaments. (That part's the actual spice!!!)
Overhead POV through a hexagon-shaped crocus blossom with soft purple petals with lighter purple stripes that start in the center of the base of each petal, and spread outward, like an ostrich plume, or a fountain. It's so pretty! It almost doesn't look real! In the center there are three yellow pollen-covered stamens, and three longer dark orange filaments with frilly tips. (That's the saffron!) A spray of dark green grass-like leaves with single white stripes down their centers spread out all around it.
Closeup of today's harvest! A dozen saffron filaments on a white paper towel, dark golden orange, with a narrow golden yellow end (where it inserts into the flower) and a slightly wider frilly end.
