President Donald Trump has threatened to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell if he does not step aside at the end of his term in May. Powell's term expires on 15 May, but he is planning to remain in post until his successor, Kevin Warsh, is confirmed by the Senate.

NEW: The DOJ's probe into the Fed, which Trump defended Wednesday, risks handing the president a double loss: It threatens to leave his candidate for chair in limbo once Powell's term ends. It also raises the odds that Powell stays on as a governor www.nytimes.com/2026/04/15/b... @nytimes.com

Federal prosecutors from Jeanine Pirro's office appeared without warning at the Federal Reserve's HQ seeking a tour of an active construction site.
The officials were turned away.
Trump's DOJ has been targeting Fed Chair Powell. No evidence suggesting wrongdoing has been found.
Here we go again, Trump can’t control his belligerent behavior. Fed Chairman Powell’s term ends May 15th. We would all benefit from Powell finishing his term & staying on in a lower position, still able to influence Fed policy, we’ll see…
Trump: "Powell is a bad chairman, and I was surprised when Biden extended him."
(Trump appointed Powell.)
“Bad,” as in “not corrupt?”
If Trump tries to follow through on his threat to fire Powell from the fed, it will be another example of shooting himself in the foot. Not only will he lose in court, Republicans in the Senate don't have the votes to confirm a new Fed Chair as long as Trump's witch hunt against Powell continues.

Does Trump have the power to fire Powell, as opposed to replacing him at the end of his term? (I am not asking whether the Supreme Court will give him that power; just about how the law is written.)
Powell could stay till 2028:
"Last month, Powell said he had 'no intention of leaving' the Fed until the investigation is 'well and truly over, with transparency and finality.'"
He will never get any transparency or finality during this administration.

This is the ultimate "Fool Around, Find Out" episode as it relates to the Fed. It increasingly looks as if the president is going to make it as difficult as possible for Powell to do what Trump and Powell both want, which is for Powell to leave the Fed when his term ends.
Trump tells Bartiromo he doesn't want to drop any Fed probe because he thinks the cost overruns need to be examined.
He says Tillis's threat to delay Warsh's confirmation isn't serious... and if it is, he'll fire Powell after Powell's term ends www.wsj.com/economy/cent...

ICYMI: While Trump is musing again about firing Powell to distract, stagflation is very real and brought on by an incompetent regime.
Bank of America just dropped one of the sharpest reads on the U.S. economy, and it comes down to just four words: “classic stagflationary market environment.”

So what do folks predict SCOTUS would do if Powell sued? I think Alito, Thomas, and Gorsuch would be side with Trump. Liberals obviously on Powell's side. Roberts and Barrett would be torn and Kav would go with the crowd. If I had to bet I'd say 5-4 in favor of Powell, carving out a Fed exception

Trump said he will fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell if he does not step aside when his term expires next month.
Powell’s tenure as chair expires on May 15. Trump’s pick for a replacement, Kevin Warsh, has yet to be confirmed by the Senate and the full chamber.
Breaking NYT:
Trump is now threatening to fire Jerome Powell if he does not resign from the Federal Reserve.
Powell's term as Fed chair officially ends on May 15, but he can stay on as a governor until 2028 and has said he would not leave until the criminal investigation is over.
Sorry Desperate Don but Powell is NOT going to bail you out... so go ahead and FIRE him and see how that goes.
A day after federal prosecutors visited the Fed:
(Bloomberg)- Trump said he would fire Powell if the Fed chair does not step down “in time,” adding that he would not drop the Justice Department investigation into the central bank leader. “I’ll have to fire him, OK, if he’s not leaving,” Trump said
And also worth noting, SCOTUS has already spoken up here and said that Trump does not actually have the power to fire Powell, so what this is is President Roombas pivoted back to being angry about Powell & he's just throwing a tantrum this morning
