Post 359: Cryospheres both a little worse

Antarctic gained 630,000km, and down to 11th at 6,338,000km and 0.75 million km below average.

Arctic lost 235,000km, dropped to 2nd worst at 13,545,000km and 1.1 million km below average.

We’re letting big corporations gamble with our lives. Act now, or the food could run out | George Monbiot The fragility of the global food system fills me with dread – and the war with Iran has exposed just how close to collapse it is, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Balancing UK’s welfare and defence spending ‘not zero-sum game’, minister says Treasury minister James Murray hits back at George Robertson’s criticism over military budget * UK politics live – latest updates A Treasury minister has said balancing welfare and defence spending “is not a zero-sum game”, amid stark warnings that the UK will have to increase its military budget to ensure national security during global volatility. James Murray, the chancellor’s deputy, said the government was pushing ahead with the biggest sustained increase in defence investments since the cold war, but he would not say when it would publish its delayed defence investment plan. Climate Coverage Plunges, Though Crisis More Dire Than Ever The scientific consensus that we need to phase out fossil fuels fast has not changed, but coverage about climate change in US news outlets has plunged.

“The term ‘climate crisis,’ which carries with it a more urgent connotation than the more familiar ‘climate change,’ has nearly disappeared from media lexicon.”

"In one scenario at CO₂ concentrations of 450ppm —last experienced by Earth several million years ago, when polar ice was significantly reduced—Antarctic temperatures rise by 6°C while Arctic temperatures drop by 7°C due to #AMOC collapse"

We're now at ~430ppm & rising 🙈

UK's Wind Output Surge Softens Blow from Global Energy Disruption The UK's wind energy boom is softening the impacts of the ongoing global energy disruption. 🌍💨 #RenewableEnergy #WindPower #UKEnergy #SustainableFuture

Unsurprisingly having a lot of wind energy softens the impact of global energy crises caused by illegal wars in the Middle East.

Now, imagine if we fully exploited our position as the best location for wind energy globally...

A staircase diagram with six levels rising from bottom-left to top-right. Each level on the left represents a stage in the causal chain of climate change, connected by a dashed arrow to a corresponding intervention on the right. From bottom to top: Root Drivers (economic system, fossil finance, colonial and historical structures, geopolitics) connects to Transformative System Change (economic restructuring, post-colonial redress, geopolitical shifts); Human Activities (consumption and production patterns) connects to Socio-technical and Behavioural Change (electrification, behaviour change, market incentives); Energy and Land Systems connects to Infrastructure Transition (renewables, grids, land-use redesign); Emissions connects to End-of-pipe Controls (CCS); Atmospheric GHG Concentrations connects to Carbon Dioxide Removal (including NETs); Earth's Energy Imbalance connects to Geoengineering (SRM). A diagonal arrow runs across the full diagram from Structural/Preventative at the bottom-left to Reactive/Compensatory at the top-right.

1/ Yesterday @wmo-global.bsky.social made Earth's Energy Imbalance a headline #climate indicator for the first time.

I think this could be a significant reframing of climate discourse, and it's worth paying close attention to why. 🧵

Yesterdays data on Arctic Sea Ice Extent.

The spring melt is starting at the worst (smallest) area since 1979. This year is going to break records in all the wrong way.

Early melt reduces the parasol effect, creating a warming feedback: more dark ocean to absorb heat, melting more ice, less cover.

CCC: Net-zero will protect UK from fossil-fuel price shocks - Carbon Brief The “cost” of cutting UK emissions to net-zero is less than the cost of a single fossil-fuel price shock, according to a report from the CCC.

A new UK report shows reaching net-zero is cheaper than even one fossil fuel crisis. While the Iran conflict spikes oil prices, a green grid limits bill hikes to 4% vs 60% for gas. Every £1 spent returns up to £4 in health and energy savings.
