Post 359: Cryospheres both a little worse
Antarctic gained 630,000km, and down to 11th at 6,338,000km and 0.75 million km below average.
Arctic lost 235,000km, dropped to 2nd worst at 13,545,000km and 1.1 million km below average.

Exactly 💯
“The term ‘climate crisis,’ which carries with it a more urgent connotation than the more familiar ‘climate change,’ has nearly disappeared from media lexicon.”
"In one scenario at CO₂ concentrations of 450ppm —last experienced by Earth several million years ago, when polar ice was significantly reduced—Antarctic temperatures rise by 6°C while Arctic temperatures drop by 7°C due to #AMOC collapse"
We're now at ~430ppm & rising 🙈

Measurements by buoys at four latitudes in the western Atlantic provide the strongest evidence yet that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation is weakening
Wasn't expecting the "Day After Tomorrow " so soon 😪

Sincerely… NASA couldn’t have chosen a better team of people for this mission. They have been a bright light in the shadowy time here. It’s been a joy to watch.

"A decade after the 2015 Paris Agreement articulated the 'stretch goal' of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels, it has become clear that achieving this goal is no longer plausible."

Cryospheres both a little better
Antarctic gained 606,000km, and up one to 12th at 5,011,000km and 671,000 km below average.
Arctic only lost 71,000km, up one to 3rd worst at 13,995,000km and 1.1 million km below average.
But the Arctic sea ice volume STILL very bad.
Unsurprisingly having a lot of wind energy softens the impact of global energy crises caused by illegal wars in the Middle East.
Now, imagine if we fully exploited our position as the best location for wind energy globally...

Cryospheres tale of two halves.
Antarctic worse, gained 550,000km, and dropped to 11th at 4,340,000 km and 701,000 km below average.
Arctic only lost 1,000km, up to 2nd WORST: 14,066,000km and 1.3 million km below average.
But the Arctic sea ice volume STILL very bad.
A staircase diagram with six levels rising from bottom-left to top-right. Each level on the left represents a stage in the causal chain of climate change, connected by a dashed arrow to a corresponding intervention on the right. From bottom to top: Root Drivers (economic system, fossil finance, colonial and historical structures, geopolitics) connects to Transformative System Change (economic restructuring, post-colonial redress, geopolitical shifts); Human Activities (consumption and production patterns) connects to Socio-technical and Behavioural Change (electrification, behaviour change, market incentives); Energy and Land Systems connects to Infrastructure Transition (renewables, grids, land-use redesign); Emissions connects to End-of-pipe Controls (CCS); Atmospheric GHG Concentrations connects to Carbon Dioxide Removal (including NETs); Earth's Energy Imbalance connects to Geoengineering (SRM). A diagonal arrow runs across the full diagram from Structural/Preventative at the bottom-left to Reactive/Compensatory at the top-right.
1/ Yesterday @wmo-global.bsky.social made Earth's Energy Imbalance a headline #climate indicator for the first time.
I think this could be a significant reframing of climate discourse, and it's worth paying close attention to why. 🧵

Both Cryospheres worse 😥
Antarctic, only gained 424,000km, but kept at 14th at 3,790,000 km and 582,000 km below average.
Arctic LOST 211,000km, down to WORST: 14,067,000km and 1.4 million km below average, going into Spring.
Also Arctic sea ice volume STILL very bad
Yesterdays data on Arctic Sea Ice Extent.
The spring melt is starting at the worst (smallest) area since 1979. This year is going to break records in all the wrong way.
Early melt reduces the parasol effect, creating a warming feedback: more dark ocean to absorb heat, melting more ice, less cover.
A new UK report shows reaching net-zero is cheaper than even one fossil fuel crisis. While the Iran conflict spikes oil prices, a green grid limits bill hikes to 4% vs 60% for gas. Every £1 spent returns up to £4 in health and energy savings.

Both Cryospheres gain a little
Antarctic, gained 411,000km, but dropped to 14th at 3,366,000 and 511,000 km below average.
Arctic Gained 69,000km, down to 2nd: 14,278,000km and 1.2 million km below average, probs high for year.
But Arctic sea ice volume STILL very bad

Both Cryospheres gain a little (yay!)
Antarctic, gained 250,000km, up to 17th at 2,955,000 and only 358,000 km below average.
Arctic Gained 108,000km, and up to third: 14,209,000km and 1.3 million km below average.

Our journey to replace Labour continues.
For too long they've told progressive voters that they had no choice but to vote for them.
The Manchester by-election showed that for the lie it is.
