...to see it as an idea whose time had finally arrived.

pre-existing expectations for AI that the models' fluency with language are/we're at least able to mimic reasonably well. So I think (roughly):

1. Pre-existing SaaS infra made it easy to access
2. Its domain (language) made its uses ample and evident
3. Pre-existing concepts primed many...

can be seen much more readily in the various "artificial intelligences" throughout the popular fiction of the last century and a half plus older examples from history (the Mechanical Turk) and folklore (e.g., Golems). The social pressures could also be a function of the fact that we had...

As I think about this a little more deeply: I realize that it's not only that the SaaS infra and idea has been built up socially, but I also think that the "AI" concept had been long pre-primed. IIRC, a lot of the other inventions weren't in the public imagination before they arrived. AI, OTOH...

100% agree. To "yes and": I think another part of the pressure is that the potential use-cases for LLMs are wide-ranging and readily evident. Part of that is because, like you said, the concept of SaaS has already been built-up. But, also, because it involves language which is integral to so much.

My daughter, after a toy tower collapsed: Ugh, I tried so hard!

Me: And you tried so hard?

My wife: 🀨 Don't.

Her: Yes! It was so frustrating!

Me: 😈 Cus in the end, it didn't even matter?

Her: YES EXACTLY

Wife: πŸ˜‘πŸ˜‘πŸ˜‘

This was a marathon only in the sense of the dudes who enter with zero training, peacock around at the start line, sprint their minds out once the gun goes off, drop out before the first aid station, and then still demand a finishers medal.

If anyone needed any more evidence that ADHD is genetic, my 6 year old just spent 15 minutes organizing her pictures on the fridge rather than spending 5 minutes cleaning her room.

When possible, I prefer:

main treatment -> additional treatment only affecting the mechanism -> mechanism -> DV

This obviously requires a lot of power (or strong, theoretically informed priors) to work.

But the real answer, as always, is "it depends!"

Trump went from making insane genocidal threats this morning to hyping the β€œgolden age” of Iran hours later, and he received no concessions in between. He’s an absolute basket case who needs to be removed from power before he follows through on one of his mass murder fantasies.

My cardiologist just cleared me yesterday for some activities I'd been proactively avoiding, but the stress of today makes me feel like I might need to go in and get my ticker triple checked---fucking hell.

Trump, 3 hours afterwards: "You know, you have to go down the game gotta find Nash---you ever heard the term Nash Equilibria? A beautiful word "equilibria", no one's ever heard of it; you gotta have a very smart brain to understand---a lotta wrinkles..."

Someone needs to be a hero and go on Fox and Friends & sneak in a quick lecture on game theory.

I live in a small town near the villages and MY town had a protest. And just about every town around us did too. People are MAD.

Begging the creators of the "USA: National Champions 1776" billboard I passed by this morning to read literally a single book on early US history.

Quantization from the ground up | ngrok blog A complete guide to what quantization is, how it works, and how it's used to compress large language models

I spent 2 months learning about quantization and am extremely proud of the post I've written about it. I think these are some of the nicest visuals I've ever made, and I love how this compression technique invented in 1898 is being used on the bleeding edge in 2026.

Hello! Tried to access this via the link and it prompts to "get access" rather than providing a chance to read. I was wondering if it should be a different link?

They did not answer me by mail,
They did not answer me by snail,
They did not answer me for money,
Nor for a chance to pet a bunny.
I did not talk to any Mainers
(my provider has no explainers)
My MoE is kinda blah,
My weighting may have had a flaw!

If I'm privileged enough to one day go to the pearly gates, I'm going to ask my creator why he felt so compelled to wire my brain to I find writing a 2 sentence email as appealing as walking barefoot over 100 meters of Lego.
