Recognition gives a participant a clear sense of achievement, acknowledges a participant for completing smaller goals along the way to a bigger goal, allows us to highlight the positive parts of a person’s identity, and helps build a sense of momentum.
What motivates you to work on your goals?
Types of recognition may include:
🎉 Celebrations of success like community meetings or ceremonies
📜 Certificates, typically given out at celebrations or individual meetings
📞 Supportive messages like calls, texts, or emails
💵 Earned incentives, monetary recognition like gift cards or cash
EMPath believes recognition should be consistent and openly communicated. From the very beginning of the goal setting process, mentors and participants discuss what motivates the participant and how that connects to the recognition the mentor is able to provide upon completion of the goal.

What are some goals you have for 2026? 🎯
Mentors and participants use a special worksheet developed by EMPath when setting goals. It lets mentors and participants ensure the goal is “SMART” – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
EMPath participants always determine their own goals. This is key. Each person is the expert of their own life and has their own unique challenges and strengths.

The Bridge is used as an assessment, goal setting, and measurement tool that helps frame participants’ decisions. It serves as a conversation guide for mentors and participants to see where the participant is at, where they want to be, and what goals they can set to help them get there.
The layout of the Bridge serves as a visual tool for participants to set goals and make future-oriented decisions. The Bridge is divided into five “pillars”:
🏠 family stability
🙂 well-being
💵 financial management
🏫 education & training
💼 employment & career
The Bridge takes a comprehensive approach, because a person is more likely to achieve economic independence if they look across all areas of life. Difficulties in one part of life can create difficulties in another; similarly, success in one area can reinforce success in another.

This change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time for habits to be unlearned and for new skills to develop and stick. And, because everyone is different, each person’s journey is unique – and each person is the expert of their own journey.
That's where coaching comes in. Coaches (known as Mobility Mentors at EMPath) work with participants to strengthen their decision-making, persistence, and resilience over time.
The stresses of poverty compromise the very same skills necessary for people to lift themselves out of it, juggling life’s many challenges with few resources and opportunities. In order for someone to make significant and lasting life changes, they must believe in themselves.
