Figure showing number of competitive grants mentioning women from 2015-2025. The number was rising until recently, with a precipitous drop in the last year.
At the end of 2024, the National Academies put out a report concluding the NIH has woefully underfunded women’s health research, and they suggested $15 B should be invested over the next 5 years.
Here’s what’s happened instead. Hard to study women’s health if you can’t say “women.”

Washington Post article on STEM cuts at federal agencies. NSF tops it at -42%!
“Between January 2025 and February 2026, STEM and health employees at science-focused agencies saw nearly 15,000 jobs cut. The rate outpaced cuts among other federal workers.”
OPM data - Figure from Wash Post article 19 April. (Where US science has been hit hardest.)
NSF at -42%!
Want to support #WomeninSTEM? Don’t hold back an invite for something bc they’re pregnant/ just had a baby/ have a small child. People always say they’ll invite “later” but later never comes- let me lean on my support network and figure it out instead! 🔭🧪

These news stories are becoming something of a "new normal" and that, obviously, is not good. I don't know how we rebuild the reputation of American public research universities after this www.ipm.org/news/2026-04...

Senior professors - if you want to help your junior colleagues in these times, I am begging you, review our papers. I have done 25 manuscript reviews in the last 6 years. But my own manuscript is stalled out waiting for reviewers. Relatedly, I won't be doing any more reviews until tenure. 🧪
Woohoo, here's my essay with my fav co-author on 30,000 fellowship wins across the Guggenheim, Stanford CASBS, NAEd, National Humanities Center, RSF visiting scholar, and Harvard Radcliffe.

I fucking love this. There's so much weird knowledge amongst birders and bird people, just out here experimenting in casually scientific ways and doing all sorts of cool shit just because it makes them happy and interested, and I wish that that was the wider world I lived in

Our chancellor wants to censor the truth because he knows it topples the hateful ideology of MAGA.
Knowledge is power, so they plan to destroy it.
🚨 NSF is already quietly eliminating the SBE Directorate, despite Congress’ mandate that NSF support the behavioral & social sciences.
Steps to counter this are in motion.
If you
- have an SBE proposal under review
- serve on an SBE grant panel

“We’ve lost out on the ability to continue to improve this work to make it more effective, and to explore how to apply it to other areas…There are a lot of different ways that genetics has been used to justify prejudice and…that human-made social categories interface with biological categories“🧪
