Plenty of people were online and connecting to communities there, yes, even queer teens, when it was all forums and chat rooms and not just a part of some ad-tech money spigot for the worst people in the country.

I’d say the algorithm has only made things worse for people in those communities. It’s a strict downgrade from the feed based on people you follow. But you also don’t even need a “feed” at all!

I couldn’t disagree with most of what is being said here. it’s buying into the frame that the only way to exist socially on the internet is via what Meta, TikTok, etc, have made. But we’re all old enough to remember that internet communities existed for a lot longer than “algorithmic social media.”
