Would love to hear a digital archivist’s take on this. How hard would it be to pull the XML out of Word doc from some deprecated version of MS Word? And what do you do with native Word docs? Copy and paste into an open doc before you archive it?

As Western heat wave ends, scientists try to make sense of its length and intensity The heat dome set more than 1,500 temperature records across 11 states. Temperatures were 20 to 30 degrees above average in some places.

We need to “pattern disrupt” the way we look at our warming world.

Warming is getting much worse, quickly.

We need to discuss hard adaptation and an urgent halt to fossil fuel use.

No easy choices. Only hard ones left.

This is the “post-Holocene”

Record-torching March heat 'virtually impossible' without climate change » Yale Climate Connections Friday's spring equinox may seem like a quaint notion to those already enduring furnace-like 90-110°F summer heat.

Record heatwaves are now all over the news. What's scary is that it only gets warmer—much warmer—in the coming years.

I urge people to treat the "post-Holocene" as here and now, requiring a completely different attitude and relationship with the planet.

Post-Saddam Iraq at 23: The War It Never Wanted Is Back On the anniversary of the 2003 invasion, Iraq finds itself trapped between the same external powers that have defined — and destroyed — its last quarter-century

Twenty years ago in Iraq, ignoring the expert weapons inspectors proved to be a fatal mistake In this SIPRI Essay, former nuclear inspector Robert Kelley describes how the case for invading Iraq in 2003 was built on false claims about weapons of mass destruction.

A timely read:

"The claim by David Kay—'we were almost all wrong’—reflects how most people still think of the events of 2002–2003: as a story of faulty & inadequate intelligence, rather than robust & reliable intelligence information ignored." -Robert E. Kelley

Kurdish gains in Syria could disappear without international support − just as they did in Iraq decades ago Despite risks, Kurds in Syria have the best chance in a generation to protect their national rights. Their success may hinge on the international community.

"But the history of Iraq should serve as a cautionary tale & underscores that the critical ingredient in a fair & equitable process for Kurds will be that international players stay invested in the process." @lilyhindy.bsky.social @us.theconversation.com

Climate nears tipping points Global warming must peak below 2°C to limit tipping point risks.

Scientists now argue that warm-water coral reefs are in irreversible decline at 1.4°C. Up to eight more tipping points could be triggered below 2°C.

Tipping points will define the "Post-Holocene". Transformed planetary geography will also produce historic geopolitical shocks.

The ICJ, the ICC, the UNFCCC treaty — today, none of these can compel a single Great Power to cut emissions. This is not a failure. It is by design. Great Powers have unshackled themselves from the environment and human rights precisely at the moment when oversight is most needed.

UK must stockpile food in readiness for climate shocks or war, expert warns Prof Tim Lang says country produces far less food than it needs to feed population and is particularly vulnerable

The rate of global warming has doubled. The UK is now openly preparing to stockpile food for climate shocks and war.

"Net Zero" was a soft policy illusion. We have officially entered the era of "hard adaptation."

The digital infrastructure of the United States Government is both critical and fragile. Many of us who work in digital government have been trying to figure out what’s going on as norms and protocols are being subverted — Thread on some of what we know so far:

It'll take 3 years if I agree to limit my request to "responsive" documents with select keywords. If a 50 page report mentions "Anbar" on 1 page and related issues on the other 49, I only get that 1 page.

Is it worth 3 years to get a document set with potentially huge and arbitrary holes in it?

4 years ago I submitted a FOIA request for documents on US information operations in Fallujah. Last year I finally got a lawyer to pressure CENTCOM to comply. Just got a notice that it will take 3 to 6 more years to complete my request.

Why is FOIA so broken?
