Final decision on disputed price controls for 5 water companies An independent group of experts appointed by the CMA has decided how much revenue 5 water companies are allowed following their rejection of Ofwat’s decision.

Competition regulator allows additional 2% -4% increase in England water bills on appeal.

Regulators side with industry.

Companies to collect more money from captive customers, dump sewage in rivers, pay dividends, exorbitant exec pay.

Rip-off continues. Who protects people?

The ‘Swiss Swindle’ — Does Starbucks short-change coffee-producing countries? — Centre for International Corporate Tax Accountability and Research While claiming 99% of its coffee beans are ‘ethically’ sourced, Starbucks’ shifts profits to Switzerland, leaving scant revenue for coffee-producing countries and perpetuating poverty in farming commu...

Starbucks claims of ethical conduct and supporting farmers are a sham.

It books profits from the purchase and sale of green coffee beans in Switzerland, dodges taxes.

Shifts profits. 18% mark-up on all global coffee purchases before re-selling to other Starbucks subsidiaries.

McSweeney and Mandelson and Blair, oops I mean BLiar. It’s sad that a once great party has come to this. Hope Your Party coalesces into a decent honest democratic movement after Conference.

Nigel Farage says he wants to 'raise aspiration' by cutting the minimum wage for young people (currently £10), but reducing tax for young people earning over £100k. Presumably he wants them to just ask their stockbroker fathers to fix them up with a job in The City, like he did.

Funny how the members of this shitty government planning this regressive authoritarian legislation (and those of the Tory ones that preceded it) saw the relentless and prolonged harassment of Jeremy Corbyn at his home by the media & others as a mere joke

'Bring it on': Left-wing activists gather for fight back against the right - and Labour Zack Polanski, Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana will headline a left-wing festival in Manchester this weekend - as progressive voters look for an alternative to Labour.

From Thursday to Sunday, a programme of Left politics, arts and cultural events takes place in Manchester, a week after Labour's annual party gathering in Liverpool.

NB: I’m always amused when the Tories meet up in Manchester: they have had no Manc MPs for years.

Tell Keir Starmer to scrap his ID card scheme With his government in turmoil and Nigel Farage breathing down his neck, Keir Starmer has reached for the panic button, announcing a scheme for ID cards that would be compulsory to prove your right to...

I've just used Good Law Project's tool to tell Keir Starmer that his ID scheme is a recipe for repression. Will you do the same? goodlaw.social/364f2b

“Camp Reichenbach,” Embroidered Handkerchief, by Agatha Abrahamina (Atie) Siegenbeek van Heukelom (1913-2002)

cotton and silk, 1944

After being imprisoned in Amsterdam, Atie Siegenbeek was transferred through Camp Vught (Netherlands) and then Ravensbrück to the Reichenbach concentration camp. There, she was forced to work in an underground electronics factory. Recording these daily camp scenes, embroidered on a wash cloth, was an act of resistance. The scenes, accompanied by captions, criticized the camp regime. It was crucial that she not be caught with this handkerchief by a camp guard.

Privatisation broke our water system.

@labourslewis.bsky.social has a people-first, evidence-based alternative, and I’m backing it.

A red fabric patch with small white flowers features an embroidered quote by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. The text, stitched in black on white strips, reads: “Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach.” In the lower left corner is a circular logo reading “Lei Pua Ala: Queer Histories of Hawaii.”

The mathematics of starvation: how Israel caused a famine in Gaza Israel controls the flow of food. It calculated how much Gaza needs – but data shows how this is being withheld The mathematics of famine are simple in Gaza. Palestinians cannot leave, war has ended farming and Israel has banned fishing, so practically every calorie its population eats must be brought in from outside. Israel knows how much food is needed. It has been calibrating hunger in Gaza for decades, initially calculating shipments to exert pressure while avoiding starvation. Continue reading...
