Huge opportunity to try to reach Weather Channel viewers on the importance of supporting the science their reporting depends upon?

Familiar with use of dropsonds in TCs… assume these are dropped by drones? What’re the little stick thingies in the styro cups actually measuring?

On Thursday, the #ICECHIP teams performed an impressive hail sampling effort on a storm to the south of Lubbock, Texas. Hail reports from our teams can always be found here on our website: icechip.niu.edu/reports/

Brewing tornados and wildfires… potential for a real expensive few days, according to @walkerashley.bsky.social. Stay safe, folks.

NASA Intern Found Hope in the Moon - NASA Lee esta historia en español aquí

This profile has been scrubbed from the site. Rose Ferreira grew up without reliable electricity, immigrated to NY, then survived homelessness and cancer on her way to NASA. She was so moved by images from the Webb telescope she wept. This is what’s at stake

Here is another #Bluesky starter pack with scientists who were involved in the @ipcc.bsky.social #AR6 reports (with a likely WGI bias). Please let me know if I missed you!

My wish for the future: 1) government data sets receive DOIs and 2) data.gov facilitates automatic mirroring of the entire archive.

You gotta teach me how to wrangle these interwebs like this. So— in the end, did you get anything out of AGU via this method?

I dont understand your implicit connection between public availability and capacity for building/operationalizing…

We are working toward full-scale climate cat models quite hard in my organization. Lots of exciting progress but the ultimate goal of unified risk view everywhere is still many years away.

Exactly why (at least at the company I work for) we dont spend nearly as the resources on projections of risk! Can only provide physically plausible and scientifically reasonable sketches, but the sci uncertainty is too huge to validate.

@adamsobel.bsky.social took a stab at this about a decade ago. But it didn’t take off—- because who’s to be the arbiter of model quality?? Other than proven use over time…

Some of it is publicly available. I am always astounded that nobody outside the modeling companies who purports to be interested in building cat models ever looks at it, or what the required exhibits are….

Repost this if you’re old enough to remember when they tried to convince us that “global warming stopped in 2008” (or whenever).

Oooooh, aaaah.

…But what differentiates it? (And did we need another better one and I just haven’t known about that?)

Aerial photo of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers converging. Green tree-covered hill on the left, the town of Harper’s Ferry in the middle. Two bridges cross the water. The Shenandoah on the left is murky brown; the Potomac is green-blue. A sharp line between them.

Incredible photo via Potomac Riverkeeper today (credit: Nathan Hitt) of the Shenandoah River, muddy with polluted runoff from Helene, meeting the Potomac at Harper’s Ferry.

#Helene made landfall ~11pm Thursday night in the Big Bend area of Florida as a Category 4 hurricane and as of 5am Friday is centered over central Georgia. Significant impacts from rain, tornadoes, and strong winds will continue over the next 1-2 days.

“As the prospect of a major hurricane menaces much of Florida, a quick reminder: Under Project 2025, that controversial right-wing blueprint for a GOP-led national government, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration would be dismantled”
