Yes! and I love how you brought up students. It's so important to model this to them.
Yeah, the scholarly patterns make it difficult and can also make it hard to get to writing even though many folks have to do that to keep their jobs or (even better) want to do it. You sure sound like a writer to me!
Do you scholarly writers out there think of yourselves as writers? I have been reflecting on how, despite a range of publications, I still don't. So I'm trying to introduce myself as a writer, to help me prioritize this part of my work. I think it's helping. Thoughts?

I totally agree! Sometimes "complexity" is used to avoid the kind of clear thinking it takes to make a really important argument.
As scholars, we've been writing arguments since (probably before) college. But it can be hard to come up with an argument or tell if it's a strong one. Let's make it easier! Come to my FREE argument workshop on April 8 from 3 to 4:30 Eastern.

Yes! Such a good reminder to look at the notes!
How does a developmental editor cut a too-long article?
I needed to cut 3,500 words.
1: Eliminate redundancy and wordiness (-1000).
2: Cut larger sections that didn't fully support the argument (-2000).
3: Refine, marking additional repetitiveness.
How do you do it?

Navigating relationships with acquisitions editors can be scary. But they are also humans who understand that meeting deadlines can be difficult. In this post I explain how it usually goes if your manuscript is late.

Those are great points. It also overlooks an opportunity to let a heading do some work for your writing, signaling an important point you hope readers take away from a piece.
Six bald eagles on a tree overlooking a river
I just saw TEN bald eagles hanging out over the Mohawk river watching for fish. It's the most spectacular thing I've ever seen in nature and it was just from this viewing point for a waterfall (like right off the road, basically). This gives me a little hope. Now off to a protest!
This isn’t immigration policy. It’s a business model.
ICE keeps growing, not because it makes America safer, but because corporations are raking in billions off cages, bodies, and suffering. ICE’s existence is a massive revenue stream.

If you are feeling stressed by your winter break writing project, take a beat and ask yourself whether you can write something else instead. Do you have to write this piece now? Is there something else that would be easier? Give yourself permission to shift course!

Oh, cool! I'm just a solo freelancer and am not planning on growing. People have recommended Bonsai and HoneyBook. Do you agree? Or have others to recommend? Thank you so much!
#Freelancers! What project management software do you like? Mine is going away in early 2026. Boo! I'd ideally like some that does invoicing, time tracking, contracting, and accounting as well as allows me to keep track of clients (including taking meeting notes). Thanks for any help!

Feeling overwhelmed by writing the book's introduction? You aren't alone.
In this week's TEA Delivered, I discuss five elements of book introductions. Keeping these components in mind may make outlining (and writing) the introduction a little easier.
