Yeah, the scholarly patterns make it difficult and can also make it hard to get to writing even though many folks have to do that to keep their jobs or (even better) want to do it. You sure sound like a writer to me!

Do you scholarly writers out there think of yourselves as writers? I have been reflecting on how, despite a range of publications, I still don't. So I'm trying to introduce myself as a writer, to help me prioritize this part of my work. I think it's helping. Thoughts?

How does a developmental editor cut a too-long article?

I needed to cut 3,500 words.

1: Eliminate redundancy and wordiness (-1000).

2: Cut larger sections that didn't fully support the argument (-2000).

3: Refine, marking additional repetitiveness.

How do you do it?

Six bald eagles on a tree overlooking a river

Six bald eagles on a tree overlooking a river

I just saw TEN bald eagles hanging out over the Mohawk river watching for fish. It's the most spectacular thing I've ever seen in nature and it was just from this viewing point for a waterfall (like right off the road, basically). This gives me a little hope. Now off to a protest!

This isn’t immigration policy. It’s a business model.

ICE keeps growing, not because it makes America safer, but because corporations are raking in billions off cages, bodies, and suffering. ICE’s existence is a massive revenue stream.

If you are feeling stressed by your winter break writing project, take a beat and ask yourself whether you can write something else instead. Do you have to write this piece now? Is there something else that would be easier? Give yourself permission to shift course!

BANNED BOOKS WEEK Oct. 5-11, 2025. Censorship is so 1984 - Read for Your Rights. ala.org/bbooks. American Library Association

Today kicks off #BannedBooksWeek, and this year's theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights.
