We analyzed data from 11 European countries and found that while the strength of the effect varied, all countries showed a positive association between depression/anxiety symptoms and ostracism.
People with more symptoms are not just more likely to be ostracized—they also more often ostracize others.
🚨 New paper out in Journal of Affective Disorders, with @bogatyreva-nat.bsky.social, @chrbuettner.bsky.social, and Rainer Greifeneder!

Tracking #conspiracy belief over time offers a window into how psychological needs factor into such thinking. A real pleasure to be involved in this great study led by @ealbath.bsky.social ! (+ @mdmarques.com and others)

New findings! 📊
Analyzing 4 annual waves of data (N = 55,269), we show:
Between-person:
Chronically lower need satisfaction links to stronger conspiracy beliefs (CB).
Within-person:
- Lower control & belonging → increases in CB.
- Higher meaning in life also → increases in CB.

Very cool paper on social exclusion experiences online!
Would be interesting to see how these findings translate to other platforms, like those centered on pictures rather than text. #SocialPsychology #ostracism #socialexclusion
According to my freshmen students, I’m not just their lecturer—I’m a style icon! 💃 My millennial heart may or may not have skipped a beat reading that in their evaluations. 😄
But seriously, such a fun, interactive group with great discussions—teaching them has been a total joy. ❤️ #socialpsychology
