Last time I got called for jury duty they WERE asking potential jurors questions about if they watched detective shows, true crime, etc.

idk if anyone got actually got released from that trial because of it, but it did seem like a case where true crime fans would have been especially difficult.

I suspect the neutrals are just more convenient for the dealerships.

when everything’s a bland color, most people will settle for whatever’s available on the lot.

If they have more interesting color options, they’ll have to deal with more customers insisting on a color they don’t have in stock.

This sounds absurd to me, but when my parents bought their truck (which is blue), the dealer told them that most people don’t want colors because they’re afraid it’ll be seen as a gang affiliation.

i’d describe it more as drinking from the wrong side of the glass, if that helps?

put your lips on the rim on the far side of the glass (bring your head down to the glass instead of trying to lift the glass to your face). then gradually lean forward until the water touches your lips

It works!

And it’s best to use something with a smooth texture for lifelines, not just any scrap yarn!

I like to use embroidery floss—it’s smooth, so it’s easy to remove, it’s strong, and I can pick a color that contrasts with my yarn so it’s easy to see what I’m doing when picking up my stitches.

I like to put in a lifeline after the last row of the chart—that way I don’t have to frog all the way and I can start at row 1 of the chart instead of trying to figure out where I was.

(Once I get more confident I might put them less frequently instead of every time)

well. as of today, I’ve worked at the U of A for HALF OF MY LIFE.

not sure how i feel about that.

it’s had ups and downs (and been not so great since the university's financial crisis/IT reorg a couple years ago). but i guess overall it's worked out pretty well.

streaming is only convenient if you’re not sure what you want and are willing to accept whatever the algorithm suggests

4 days ago 6 1 1 0

yes! and streaming services are incredibly inconvenient if you want a specific thing

let’s say i want to watch the fellowship of the ring. which platforms have it? is it included with my subscription, ad-supported, or just available to rent? is it a different platform than last time I watched it?

A square or rectangle of screw holes like that is generally called a VESA mount, but there are different types (VESA-B, etc depending on the spacing of the holes and the screw size)

I think those white spots (they are threaded, right?) are the mounting holes you’d use for mounting an aftermarket stand, instead of that notch the current stand fits into.

Tiny sample size, etc, but still. It’s not *just* that people’s feelings about inflation are inaccurate.

The way “inflation” is calculated doesn’t always reflect how people are spending their money.

This! A few years back, I compared an old grocery receipt to the then-current prices and found that my grocery price went up by 20% when an inflation calculator suggested it should have gone up by 10%.

My parakeets like to perch on hanging lamps and I REALLY want to see how they’d react to this. 🤣

why is a zenni optical offering a LASER POINTER as a free gift with orders?

i'm not going to keep buying glasses if i accidentally blind myself.

When the flowers drop, they’re sticky and will stain your car, sidewalks, etc.

People want to park their cars in the shade, but they don’t want the flowers to fall on their cars and they get mad about having to choose one or the other.

I guess if we’re thinking about electronics experts, modern stuff would probably be hard to comprehend for anyone who hadn’t heard of integrated circuits. So pre-1960ish?

there’s a range of quality even just between store brands.

“ice cream sandwiches” (albertsons) are distinctly better than “frozen dairy dessert sandwiches” (kroger).

Once you have “recorded audio” and “wireless transmission,” you have the building blocks for Bluetooth headphones.

AirPods would still be astonishing, but not completely unthinkable. It’s just an extremely complicated and extremely small combination known technologies.

1880s, maybe 1870s?

That gets us out ahead of some of the big concepts like:
- radio waves (1880s)
- moving pictures (1880s/90s)
- (practical) electric light (1879)
- phonograph (1877)
- telephone (1876)

Yeah, the symptoms can be SO different. My mom thought her heart attack was just her chronic shoulder pain acting up—we’re lucky her coworkers called an ambulance despite her protests.

I hope your mom has an easy recovery!

It did for me! I had a couple of extra days to explore when I was in Pittsburgh for a conference a few years back and I loved it.

yeah, i didn’t ever use clippy’s help, but i liked having a little animated companion. it was cute when he’d curl up and sleep.

i’m liking the right. that head-on view is the kind of angle you’d see in a a catalog or a formal photo of a living room. it makes the sofa’s surroundings and bedraggled state feel *wrong* (in an interesting way)

it's fine on my phone, though that is NOT THE DEVICE I WANTED TO WATCH THE GAME ON. and it will technically play on the apple TV, but with fucked up, washed out colors.

i've watched a bunch of march madness games on sling without encountering this problem, but apparently this game is in "4K HDR."

it will not play on the roku. It will not play on the ipad. It will not play in chrome OR safari on my laptop.
