This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

"Hegseth had been pressing senior Army leaders, including Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll, for months to remove the officers’ names.... But Mr. Driscoll, citing the officers’ decades-long records of exemplary service, had repeatedly refused."

I told @brookings.edu that Trump will be further emboldened after Maduro's capture and Khamenei's killing to go after heads of state. "Trump has proven to be even more hawkish than his predecessors, leaving future generations to face the eventual blowback."

Fascinating paper by Sean Paul Ashley on "The Dark Side of Defection" in @jpeaceresearch.bsky.social:
"I find that where nonviolent revolutions involved security force defection, coups and civil wars were significantly more likely to ensue."

What should military leaders do when a president orders something illegal? History offers a guide. @kschake.bsky.social on how Ulysses S. Grant navigated the most dangerous civil-military crisis in American history.
Exciting news! We just posted an opening for a Survey Associate on @pewresearch.org's Methods team! This is an amazing opportunity for someone relatively early in their career to join what is, IMO, the most fun methods team in the business. Full description at the link below.

"A large share of Iranians today personally knew someone murdered by authorities this month. Thus even people who did not themselves participate in the demonstrations now have a personal grievance with the regime."
"Through intense repression, the Islamic Republic has managed to survive another day, but at a significant cost. The massacres have deepened antiregime sentiment across society in powerful ways, even if the long-term political consequences remain uncertain."
"By further delegitimizing the system, the massacres in Iran will make it even more difficult for the regime to win back support through reforms or concessions."
Wrote about the deadly repression in Iran with a brilliant PhD student, Ehsan Habibpour: www.journalofdemocracy.org/online-exclu...
"Earlier this month, Iranian authorities killed thousands of protesters, potentially tens of thousands — most of them over the course of just two days, January 8–9."

@sharangrewal.bsky.social: while "grievances for revolution have returned, the factors that had facilitated Tunisia’s revolution and transition to democracy—a supportive military, a strong civil society, and a cooperative political class—have largely disappeared."

Today marks 15 years since Tunisia kickstarted the Arab Spring. Is a new revolution possible in Tunisia today? Yes, but it will be more difficult than in 2011.

This poll shows that 74% of Democrats support abolishing ICE, with 53% *strongly* supporting getting rid of the agency.
Any elected Democrat who wants ICE to exist is outside the mainstream of their party and the people they purport to represent.
