I’ve been told, whether apocryphal or not that CSA, at one point was meant to aggregate almost all space spending, including to try to avoid the Tri-Councils funding space stuff as space was getting lost and seemed really expensive compared to competing projects.

Yeah. Estimates aren’t the best tool for this. Doesn’t help that fed estimates and appropriations are multiple times per year.

Many ago helped in my own way to get to fund an instrument that was delivered by CSA but not funded by them. No idea how that ends up being reflected in estimates 😅

That would include capital for acquisition of lunar gateway components and other equipment/services. While acknowledge a general down trend accruals make the fall off look way more drastic (like CSA is being gutted)

Visiting my in-laws 200m from this:

Reasonably dense trees, a sound wall and being higher in elevation all add up to not much impact at all.

Doug Ford and Mark Carney have bought Ontario some time. But the hard choices lie ahead Housing may well get cheaper, but city finances still need to be fixed.

New at the Star! The Fed-Ontario development charge deal will make new homes more affordable and help build more of them. We need other provinces to follow suit (looking your way, B.C.), along with permanent, transformative change to DCs.

So, will they make it against the law to teach about defiance of the wheat board monopoly? I thought the Wildrose was proud of that! Or using government action to defy the National Energy Program? Or what about the Alberta Sovereignty Act?

I think the impact will be significant for a small number of land owners, but how we do route definition makes it very much subject to FUD, where landowners in the corridor can imagine the maximum impact.

I know people don't want consultation to be a fait accompli, but is this process better?

Alberta's rural municipalities (AAMDC) studied a hypothetical route maybe 15-20 years ago between Calgary and Edmonton. Fewer than 1000 acres (maybe even fewer than 600, but hedging my bet on my memory!) needed for ROW, or ending up in uneconomic parcels for 215 km of 'rural' HSR.

Keeps people more focused inward on their neighbourhoods, instead of outwards to city at large, to impose their vision. Enables Houston's very flexible zoning otherwise. IIRC from arbitrary lines, maybe 15% of residential zones are locked down at any time in Houston.

People tried and failed to reach thresholds to do this in Calgary and Edmonton. Not that I am am against this with expiry dates -- a similar system lets new subdivisions lock in for an initial period in Houston, and others can lock in with a vote, for up to 40 years.

I wonder if we can track back to when we started regulating floor area ratios and setting fees based on floor space from this.

#topoli Walking thru Seaton Village this am: older people out for a stroll, kids going to school, birds chirping - and all this despite the presence of a sky-is-falling small apartment, going up on Barton. (Sky: still overhead.)

Plus SpaceX has demonstrated the value of just throwing more rocket at the problem, if the rocket instead of being nearly bespoke and hand made is either mass produced or reusable to some degree. Can always double up for a more southerly site later.

Well, the efficiency loss isn’t that great. Nova Scotia isn’t any further north than the USSR’s launch complexes. Much of our government owned satellites are in polar sun synchronous orbit so little to no savings there. Telesat’s heavy Aniks most recently launched from Baikonur just fine.

What Makes People ACTUALLY Change Their Minds About Housing (real experiment)
What Makes People ACTUALLY Change Their Minds About Housing (real experiment) YouTube video by Justine Underhill

Which arguments ACTUALLY change people’s minds about housing?
Last year I worked with researchers testing different messages, and the results were... surprising!

Now, we have to demonstrate why it is so critically important to get it right. Public land is finite. Let’s protect it. Demand transparency by sharing this thread, let's make sure we get things done and get it done right.

It’s good to see real movement on the stalled "Bring Back Britannia" project. Pro-growth means getting things built, and I want to see shovels in the ground.

But wait, what is the actual benefit for the neighbourhood? Will they share this facility with the public?

Dear my delightful tweeps, some news! So after 30 years of City Hall and urban-issues stories that you all know, I'm doing something completely different — I’ve decided to run for a City Council nomination with @onecityvan.bsky.social and hopefully run on their slate this October.

The BC government says the budget has to be "tough" to tackle large deficits. But we can’t talk about deficits without talking about revenues. And BC’s revenue as a share of our economy is much lower than it was before the deep tax cuts of the early 2000s. #bcpoli #BCBudget2026

Figure 1. Study area and models of daily area burned. The black curve is the fitted generalized additive model based on the paired percentage area burned by unit Canadian Fire Weather Index System (CFWIS) indices (grey points). The shadowed areas and the vertical line are the range and the threshold of CFWIS indices used to identify a PSD.

New accepted paper in Environmental Research Letters on the extent of drought determines daily area burned (DAB) in Canadian forests. This study found a strong relationship
between DAB and the spatial extent of fire-conducive weather conditions.

Fascinating about the fireworks. Seemed to skirt on this important part though, that they had plenty of warning and for whatever reason just couldn’t restructure to be eligible for more funding:
