New review paper! We provide practical guidance for assessing self-injurious thoughts and behaviors in perinatal POC guided by cultural theory & model of suicide and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Framework.
Do individual differences in fetal physiology shape later sensitivity to early environments? Excited to share our new paper: interactions between fetal heart rate variability and postnatal parenting stress were associated with toddler externalizing behaviors!

I’ve already included it in my talks!
Our new paper is out in @infantstudies.bsky.social!
We examined the IBQ-R's factor structure + measurement invariance. Findings suggest the standard model may need adjustment for use across populations.

Congratulations, Nico, on such an innovative paper!! With everything going on in the world, it's important to remember that pregnancy/postpartum is a challenging stage of life. Suicide risk can be high and reseach on these experiences is absolutely critical.
Our article on perinatal self-injurious thoughts & behaviors is out today! We found that the odds of engaging in self-injurious behavior were 256% higher at 7 months postpartum relative to 3rd trimester of pregnancy, even after accounting for three risk factors. doi.org/10.1111/sltb...
Hi friends. The families we serve via our research studies need our support, now more than ever. Our pregnant participants are asking for help with baby supplies. If you are able to, please consider donating so we can stock up on baby supplies for these families: www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/...

an $18 Billion cut
Only 3 NIH Institutes will remain in place, and even they will have their funds markedly reduced

Cutting $20 billion to NIH over 25 years may save $500 billion on paper, but it’d end up costing $8.2 trillion in lost human health.
But NIH isn't the only thing being cut. The budget also slashes all NSF-funded science by 73 percent. NASA faces “the biggest single-year cut to NASA in history."
I co-chair a year-long program called #NIH Academy (with our AVP for Strategic Research Initiatives), designed to support ECR's targeting their first R01. Today I learned that after 9 mos of hard work, her mechanism expired - 3 days before it was due. 🧵 1/ grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

It's all part of the Project 2025 plan to destroy high education in America.
All leading US universities depend on federal funding and tuition dollars from international students. They severely curtailed the former. Now they're eliminating the latter.
A line graph depicting cumulative grant funding by the National Science Foundation from 1990 to 2025, with funding amounts on the vertical axis and timeline indicators on the horizontal axis. The graph highlights funding trends over the years, with a specific emphasis on Biden’s term and this year (which is the lowest).
Here’s how Trump’s war on science is going. NSF funding is at the lowest level in decades. We’ll lose knowledge, generations of scientists, and US competitiveness.

🚨 A new rule would let career scientists like NSF/NIH program officers be replaced by political appointees
Already 14,000+ public comments, deadline is Friday
📣 Comments can be short. Courts consider them—and scientists with NSF/NIH experience are especially impactful

I am not alarmist. I'm writing what needs to be said. Higher ed is on the brink of collapse and so much could be lost. College, alongside the military, is a second family for many adults. It is where people fall in love, pick sports teams, meet lifelong friends, and form a professional identity. A 🧵
My new Substack is about why immigration is good, immigrants make our culture better, & how MAGA pronatalists can't claim to want more babies while scapegoating the folks keeping our birth rate afloat. I worked really hard on this one so I hope you share it! darbysaxbe.substack.com/p/why-immigr...

I was on Capitol Hill on Tuesday as part of social science advocacy day. If your students could also contact their congressperson and senators that would be a huge help, according to the legislatures. If they are not sure who that person is I can put them in touch - just DM me.
🧵Yesterday, I received notice that my #NIH grant, on the social environment, lifecourse, epigenetics & #birthoutcomes in Black families, was terminated. This grant represented a critical effort to address the ⬆️ rates of maternal & infant mortality in the US, particularly among Black mothers & babies
Really exciting findings with important implications for the infant mental health field. Congrats!

Letters went out to federal workers this morning stating they were fired due to poor performance. However, all employees had been rated as “exceptional” performers by their supervisors. Please keep these records and pursue wrongful termination claims. Let the lawsuits begin.
Check out my first, first author publication! 🎉
We found prenatal resting RSA is directly associated with toddler vocab development! Also, postpartum stress mediated the association between prenatal emotion dysregulation and toddler vocab development.
