Jesse Jackson 'I Am Somebody' on Sesame Street
Jesse Jackson 'I Am Somebody' on Sesame Street YouTube video by Headline USA

We join our community in mourning the Rev. Jesse Jackson and reflecting on his work for a more just future.

His empowering appearance on Sesame Street, where he encouraged children of all backgrounds and languages to declare "I Am Somebody," still resonates today.

Meet Celimar Rivera Cosme: The Puerto Rican Sign Language Performer Joining Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl Bad Bunny is brining along Celimar Rivera Cosme—a Puerto Rican Deaf performer and sign language interpreter—to the Super Bowl halftime show. She won't just interpret his lyrics; she'll perform them.

We're still buzzing over the Bad Bunny Bowl and the pride and celebration of multilingualism we're seeing all over the place in the wake of that exciting halftime show, including the highlighting of Puerto Rican Sign Language (LSPR) & the work of Celimar Rivera Cosme.

A screenshot of my slides for Spanish class. On the left is a photo of a globe with North and South America in focus. The question “who are the people of the Americas?” wraps around the globe. In the right is an embedded YouTube clip of Bad Bunny performing at the Super Bowl halftime show in which he says “God Bless America” and then proceeds to name the different countries in north, south, and Central America.

The essential question that guides my 5th grade Spanish class is “Who are the people of the Americas?” so of course I added a clip of Bad Bunny naming all of the places in the “Americas” in my slides this morning.

Spending extra time translating their work. Cultural code-switching. Flexibly adapting. Serving as interpreter for caregivers.

What else do our multilingual learners know that they may not get credit for? Some lunchtime food for thought from @maestraolivia.bsky.social at #MultilingualIL25!

Why Bilingual Kids Have a Learning Advantage Bilingual children gain more than a second language. New research shows that speaking two languages strengthens memory, reasoning, and adaptability.

Another recent study showcases how bilingual students excel in reasoning, memory, and problem-solving skills, and how speaking multiple languages can foster understanding, empathy and respect:
