I swear people either weren’t alive or don’t remember the creation of the internet. All the chaos, failed companies, and brick and mortar businesses throwing money at it to figure it out.

The day before the Amazon IPO Bezos had no cash and a bunch of shares that made him a paper millionaire. The next day people bought and sold shares on the stock market and he had no cash but was a paper billionaire. I don’t know if that’s inherently bad, but the downstream effects have been awful.

We developed global markets that created enormous “paper wealth” for a very few winners, and have now found out that paper wealth can be used to acquire real assets and real, and almost (we hope) irresistible power.
