Sometimes I point out when the show doesn't picture a Herman Miller chair but *should*...

In Season 3 Episode 5 of Portlandia, the kid writers at Pitchforkforkids all use matching Mirras
(sorry, can't be arsed to track down a photo now, I'm procrastinating)
Liz Lemon seated in her Sayl. Very Avant Garde of her.
Also, turns out I haven't watched enough 30 Rock because I didn't know till now that she switches to a Sayl in season six.
Quite a unique choice. Gives product placement though.
Liz Lemon seated in an Aeron. Classic.
Tina Fey as Liz Lemon has class
For some reason, my wife doesn't appreciate when I point out every time a Herman Miller desk chair appears in a movie or tv show we're watching
Super minor but they are part of the erosion of our understanding of our own processes which is a core trick AI performs. Processes like learning or doing slow good work are forgotten about and all we care about are numbers (how much, when) and output (is it manuscript shaped). Pathetic really.
Oooo. My in-laws in India would *disagree*. And, seeing the bounty of snacks, sweets, and pickle they pack my bags with, I'm inclined to side with them π
Anyway, no way this applies for when visiting family internationally or when food and souvenirs are involved.
Same was reported in Denver (details specifically on No Kings in article)
This craze about Angine de Poutrine feels so much like how Tik Tok discovered The Caretaker several years ago.
Opening text of a thread by Palantir from X Because we get asked a lot. The Technological Republic, in brief. 1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation. 2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible. 3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public. 4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.
Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.

Honestly, this is super awkward but I kind of get it.
If Gavin Newsom felt he had to use language like "unhoused," I don't think we'd find him personally tearing down encampments.
I'm struck by the bravery of this student and the fantastic way the union handled this allegation. What a model for all of us to follow in terms of how to show up for our members.
Never won't be a Roan person.
He talks as if there is no distinction between people concerned with immediate harms versus the fanciful lens of rationalists predominant at OpenAI.
Who on Earth is Farrow talking about????
Listening to the Verge/Decoder interview with Ronan Farrow on Altman... enjoying the podcast episode and Farrow's attention to Altman and his history but also disappointed at how often he refers to people at OpenAI as understanding AI risks.
This is hard to wrap my head around.
It's not immediately obvious why suspending mail and not having access to fresh food happen in current circumstances. Is the US no longer capable at military logisitics? Not trying?
New from me: Tech bros have launched a campaign to convince Christians that AI is godly: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
I tried convincing Gil once that they and their church have... you could say a strong scent... of the Independent Charismatic movement. Given that this movement is featured prominently amongst Trump's spiritual advisors, I'd think that connection would merit more attention.
One thing I have noticed is that Trae and Michelle don't often get the same treatment outside naming the non-denominational church they (and other tech figures) attend, not citing what religious movements they might be associated with or influenced by.
Hi Kiera! I appreciate your attention in this article to the different religious backgrounds (Catholic, Orthodox, erc.) of tech-right figures.
My university, Mines, is cutting their writing center outright.
The reorganizing happening in response to AI is going to be destructive to institutions.
Dear god. Very, very serious allegations of mass civil rights violations at the State of Florida's Everglades immigration detention center (officially known as "Alligator Alcatraz").
Big fan of fruit and oatmeal, especially frozen blueberries.
Also, gotta have the five minute oats for a more substantial texture.
The Charlie Kirk Act, named for the late conservative activist, addresses free speech on college campuses.
Speech for (dead) Charlie, not for thee students.

it's hard to get retractions to stick because you can't un-have an emotion. a lot of people developed angry feelings for Chappell Roan over this, and now that they know she didn't actually do it they're even MORE angry at her because they resent being told they repeated wrong information
The narrative of scientific discovery in space has merit, but we need to realize that those scientific ends coexist with extractive ones at best or at worst can be cut out entirely.
Likewise, the science side of NASA has been hollowed out, and the Trump administration's hateful actions mean trans people are excluded from this project.
The connection here to space as an increasingly extractive industry is part of that colonialist project.
SpaceX Starlink satellites are the most immediate example, but more direct resource extraction and mining are increasingly important motivations that we also need to contend with.
