Had reason to remember the one libertarian who constantly denounced every other libertarian in the 00s as statists/fascists/communists and then literally moved to Somalia and ran a general store there.

I don't care what your politics are, when it comes to purity that dude's got us all beat.

It's hard to convey everything in the old activist world that was lost by so many opportunistically consolidating into One Big Party to chase Bernie's relevance.

But it is funny that so many irrelevant tankies (the ISO trots are tankies, don't @ me) have primarily used it as tankie thunderdome.

Hey y'all, Firestorm co-op is a really important part of our communities here in Asheville, and they're struggling.

Order books through them (they have a really wide selection)!

Reddit atheists are, if anything, *too soft* on contemporary American Christianity, the institutional authorities of which ought to be viewed with the same contempt good people have for strip-mall tarot readers and Andrew Tate.

also there's really exciting research looking at ancient egalitarian mass societies – the indus valley civilization being the most notable example

I do think that fundamentally a lot of discomfort with effective altruism is because it just forces us to admit that we would in fact rather spend money on frivolities than on helping other people with necessities. But I'll admit it doesn't help that the EA world is full of eugenics-curious wankers.

“Malik Muhammad, who received the harshest sentence tied to the 2020 George Floyd uprisings, has effectively been disappeared by the state…

This isn’t just neglect, it’s political repression, retaliation, and state violence.” ~ Alissa Azar

certainly there are many problems with EA but i predict that in retrospect its biggest impact will be as an incubator for various practices and norms to correct for faulty heuristics such that people are better about searching out more consequential paths of action

effective altruism is probably the best thing to come out of the original effort to Overcome Bias. doing the work to identify and correct for heretics like scope insensitivity that default people to ineffective charity and action in the world more broadly is of immense value

Leather & Lavender: The Evidence in the Pocket Spontaneous Order, the Hanky Code, and the Infrastructure of Belonging

The archive and the handkerchief—both are necessary. One survives when the record is too dangerous to keep; the other ensures we aren't forgotten.

The Decline of Resistance from the Red Scare to the War on Terror What's Missing is Solidarity

“Supporting our prisoners means defeating their attempts to terrify us, insisting on the dignity of our causes, and building communities in which we really do take care of one another, no matter what powerful interests we may be contradicting.”

Got it! That sounds right to me.

The first two libertarian types with that last name who occur to me (Wayne Allyn Root & Roger Roots) are not so good.

But yeah, agreed that the most well known libertarian legal academics aren't great here. I think a large part of this is living in the world of the Federalist Society and feeling like a Republican might appoint you to a high court. Our social milieu shapes us.

one thing i am a firm believer in is that properly egalitarian cooperation, when done right, are a tremendous force multiplier and can contest hierarchical forms of cooperation in various domains, even when hierarchies can bring to bare significantly more resources to a struggle

I remember watching this in a coffee shop last year and thinking how unsustainable this administration is. The fact that congress hasn’t impeached and removed him 10 times over is such an indictment. The US is not a serious place and we deserve what is coming for us.

It was heart-wrenching to see the shocking deterioration of Lew [Rockwell]’s health. He had difficulties speaking and he could no longer type. It was apparent that he could not possibly anymore be in full control of the mighty intellectual enterprise-the MI and LRC-that he had built up in some forty years. I also had some beginning doubts that he was the actual author of everything still written and published under his name.

The largest far-right paleolibertarian organization appears to be imploding.

Before you are tempted to use "the Constitution isn't a suicide pact" ever again to justify whatever restrictions or government power you are after, think about what that argument enables.
