I do think that fundamentally a lot of discomfort with effective altruism is because it just forces us to admit that we would in fact rather spend money on frivolities than on helping other people with necessities. But I'll admit it doesn't help that the EA world is full of eugenics-curious wankers.

certainly there are many problems with EA but i predict that in retrospect its biggest impact will be as an incubator for various practices and norms to correct for faulty heuristics such that people are better about searching out more consequential paths of action
effective altruism is probably the best thing to come out of the original effort to Overcome Bias. doing the work to identify and correct for heretics like scope insensitivity that default people to ineffective charity and action in the world more broadly is of immense value
The archive and the handkerchief—both are necessary. One survives when the record is too dangerous to keep; the other ensures we aren't forgotten.

Got it! That sounds right to me.
The first two libertarian types with that last name who occur to me (Wayne Allyn Root & Roger Roots) are not so good.
But yeah, agreed that the most well known libertarian legal academics aren't great here. I think a large part of this is living in the world of the Federalist Society and feeling like a Republican might appoint you to a high court. Our social milieu shapes us.

one thing i am a firm believer in is that properly egalitarian cooperation, when done right, are a tremendous force multiplier and can contest hierarchical forms of cooperation in various domains, even when hierarchies can bring to bare significantly more resources to a struggle

I remember watching this in a coffee shop last year and thinking how unsustainable this administration is. The fact that congress hasn’t impeached and removed him 10 times over is such an indictment. The US is not a serious place and we deserve what is coming for us.
