yes, it really suggests some things about his mindset. the interest in castration could be getting “close enough” without having to plainly write men being raped the way he writes women being, but i won’t say more because i feel i’m just speculating at this point!

no absolutely! the fact that sexual violence is rarely threatened towards men in these books is such a glaring absence. and theon’s castration in particular feels like a stand-in for him having been raped. the characters know, on some level the readers know, but it’s not stated.

if i say that game of thrones' problem is that men don't get raped in it more it sounds like i am being facetious but i am 100% serious when i say that the gendered problem with how this worldbuild works is less in the fact that women get raped a lot and more in that men don't also in the sense that if you create a brutal, hierarchical society that is incredibly preocuppied with emasculation and with sexual violence it logically follows that men are raped by other men a lot as a method of domination and as an emasculation and we don't see that very much the presence of so much castration highlights this also because like the narrative itself is aware that this worldbuild implies sexual violence to men a way of emasculating them and displays that violence in the form of castration but it mostly doesnt want to think about men being raped

i was trying to articulate this point and realized i had already written a thread on it. my mind

it’s interesting that every character whos been castrated is seen as abject or killed right after, but that does follow for a society which does not have a eunuch class and just sees it as The worst punishment for a man

it’s been a delight to see how often castration comes up as a threat (acted upon or not) in this reread LOL…with every thought or boast a man has about his cock, there’s one being chopped off
