Someone posted one of these Frank King Gasoline Alley originals on ig the other day and I was moved to look up more. These are from 1925, 1926 and then one from 1951. These blew my mind. I guess doing a Gasoline Alley deep dive this winter.

Yeah, let's ban everything. We have no evidence it helps anyone, but we just want to control teens so bad. Teens aren't people. They don't need to learn how the actual world works. Just put them in a freaking simulated past and watch them become just as backward as we are.

Meanwhile, in the free Western world, many people seem to be happy to surrender their privacy and join the UK and Australia in their mindless march towards an internet of total surveillance and ID checks.

Horrified, I’m watching Russia dismantle internet access and planning to introduce a “white list” North Korea-like model allowing users to only access a handful of “safe” sites.

My great-great-great-grandparents, the Nosonovskys, around 1888 (I still have their old spoons!)

It's amazing what ai can do to change our perception of our long gone family members, especially those stiff figures on long exposure fin-de-siècle photographs.

Casey Newton thinks that OpenAI social product really is coming: “I took the chance to ask Altman why keep posting on X, which is owned by someone who is actively destroying your company? I suggested that maybe he would build his own social product. He arched his eyebrows suggestively.”

More on Judge Alsup’s Solomonic decision finding fair use and infringement in Bartz v. Anthropic Judge William Alsup issued the first decision on fair use and infringement in a generative AI case, Bartz v. Anthropic. It was a split decision: (1) copies used to train Anthropic’s AI model …

the consensus may become that training is fair use but only on purchased and open source works

Anthropic Scores a Landmark AI Copyright Win—but Will Face Trial Over Piracy Claims While the startup has won its “fair use” argument, it potentially faces billions of dollars in damages for allegedly pirating over 7 million books to build a digital library.

a very interesting development in AI & copyright: Anthropic won in a district court forming an important precedent that training AI is indeed fair use

another ruling is expected later this year though that will probably rule out using pirated materials for AI training

Anatomy of a Hit Piece: Deconstructing The New York Times' Attack on Transgender Rights in U.S. v. Skrmetti Seemingly not content with the US v. Skrmetti decision issued by the court siding with Tenessee to ban gender affirming care for trans youth, the New York Times was ready to pour salt on the fresh wou...

I couldn't let that Confessore piece slide. It was such a disgusting hit piece on a vulnerable community in a moment of crisis. I dissected the article and why its framings are dishonest at best and outright lies of ommission at worst.

Yeah. Capitulation is how we end up becoming like the UK where the "good" party simply adopts the identical positions on this issue as the "bad" party.

Rep. Sarah McBride suggests Democratic Party overplayed their hand on transgender issues | Fox News Video Rep. Sarah McBride suggested on Tuesday that the Democratic Party overplayed their hand on transgender issues over the 2024 election cycle, arguing they were too far ahead public opinion.

Note to self: If Fox News immediately picks up your interview and broadcasts it as supporting their audience's anti-trans prejudices it's prbly a good sign you've just thrown your community under the bus. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

While this new low in The NY Times reporting may be what a lot of the general public wants today, an easy populist win by throwing a tiny vulnerable group under the bus, it won’t age well, as one of the commentators reflected:

The article dwells upon the (politicized and long since debunked) British review that led to inhumane cuts in gender affirming care in rhe UK, and fails to mention that the more recent and more professional reviews in France and Germany have supported these life saving medical services for minors.

After the terrible blow against trans rights Wednesday, @nytimes.com published a novel-long piece about “how the trans movement lost”, full of blatant victim blaming, spreading distrust against doctors and scientists and generally concluding that the Dems had been lured into supporting trans kids.

fast, manages multiple characters well and in a versatile way, optimizes cam movement, introduces new characters into the scene consistent with style, attentive to detail (very few uncanny valley artifacts)

I have always considered Dave Holz one of the greatest visionaries of our time.

“As you know, our focus for the past few years has been images. What you might not know, is that we believe the inevitable destination of this technology are models capable of real-time open-world simulations.

The Trump administration is ending 988 Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ service—which has received over 1.3 million calls, texts, & chats since 2022.

The Supreme Court also just upheld a law banning all gender-affirming care for minors.

This is just plain cruel and wrong.
