We already know speed increases mistakes, both bugs and design flaws, even before the LLM height I was advocating for developers to take their time and evaluate the code and the systems they produce and negotiate for more time to make sure what they deliver is correct to their knowledge
Taking out what little of this deep understanding to generate thousands and even millions of systems on industrial scale, will cause catastrophes at an increasing rate, its really just a numbers game
And for what benefit? That we build systems faster? This just isn't a good trade off
Understanding the web of impacts software systems, starting from the code which comprises it down to its secondary impacts is complex, daunting, and is not nearly performed remotely enough, and unfortunately, it is mostly done retrospectively
We are so reliant upon software systems for our daily lives, indirect impacts of system failures can also have life changing and even life ending circumstances for individuals, outages in banking apps regularly leave people stranded and even in danger
But none of its engineers had to foresight to see that a system with such high level of control of the aircraft receiving data from so few sensors with such few checks lead to catastrophe when those sensors failed
And this is just discussing direct impacts of system failures
Then there are cases in which a software system can work perfectly without any bugs in a traditional sense, but failure to identify complex impacts of how a system was intended to function leads to dire consequences, a good example of this is Boeing's MCAS, it operated perfectly -
I once investigated a bug in the front end of an IMS used by a hospital preventing access to patient data, the bug ultimately stemmed from a obscure client side library maintained by a single developer, the lack of access to data held by this IMS was ultimately linked to 2 deaths
If you believe this tradeoff is worth it, maybe, for perhaps low risk and non-dependant systems and such as portfolio websites; however the second this system becomes depended upon (which over the course of a system's lifetime happen surprisingly easily) the risks can multiply arbitrarily
An language-specialised generative model with no ability to perform hard reasoning nor posses level understanding will never be able to ensure the correctness of a system, you will always be sacrificing the quality of a system using these models in exchange for speed of development
If your idea about the challenges facing development is that it's all to do with creating code and not ensuring code correctness, security, and maintainability; your idea of engineering of software systems is just plainly wrong
