New paper 📝! In deep-UV AR-HCFs we found a reversible attenuation effect... like solarization, but temporary. We call it “pseudo-solarization.” doi.org/10.1364/OE.5... #research #photonics

We look at how different numbers of capillaries affect the guidance properties of hollow core fibres, enabling the guidance of ~ 50 modes in the near-infrared. Some cool fibres in here that guide the visible and ultraviolet #science #optics #photonics

Three women, dressed to run at an event.

Ran 10k this weekend with my sisters in memory of our Nan💙
Was special (and chaotic) doing it together — one sister ran with a broken elbow, the other with a broken toe 😅 We’ve raised £1.5k for the hospice. We’re really grateful for all the donations, thanks!

Happy to share our work published in Nature Photonics: "Threading light through dynamic complex media". We show how to pilot beams of light through the most stable channels within moving scattering media. Special thanks to Chai, Christina & John from the Structured Light Group, Exeter! #Photonics💡

"U-care" has published its latest study, led by Asta Valančiūtė, on bioRxiv.

They show that even low doses of far-UVC light (206 nm, 222 nm) can directly damage DNA in human lung epithelial cells.

Congrats to the team for their hard work:

Hello, just arrived on bsky! Looking for fellow optics researchers. To kick things off - here is our latest preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2501.14129 'Self-configuring high-speed multi-plane light conversion'. Lead author José Rocha prefers to go make a cup of tea rather than manually align his MPLC...

This is another first author paper from rising star and current #PhD student, Robbie Mears! Anti-resonant hollow core fibres with this many cladding capillaries can be difficult to fabricate, so this represents a very large step in our fabrication capabilities.

Three hollow core fibres rendered in blender. They have a higher number of cladding elements, so offer more multi-mode capacity.

Traditional multi-mode #optical fibres are straightforward, but the same is difficult to achieve in hollow core fibres. We report anti-resonant hollow core optical fibres guiding at least 50 spatial modes in the infrared (~5-fold improvement ). #science #photonics #research

Plants play a LOT of clever tricks with light (beyond that little miracle that is photosynthesis). If the topic interest you, there is a #PhD position open to work on it with Dr. Rox Middleton (a very bright young researcher at @uniofbath.bsky.social)

Hi all! Lots of new activity here, so I will introduce myself! I'm a UK early career researcher in photonics. I
🔹 Fabricate novel optical fibres
🔹 Post-process them to create advanced devices
💡 Focused on UV hollow-core fibres & applications in healthcare.
I use bsky to post about my research 🔬

New research in Optics Express📜! We linked unexpected UV loss in HCFs to gaseous chlorine. For transmission to recover, this needs to diffuse out. This has implications for current goals for long length, high yields of #fibreoptic HCF #Photonics doi.org/10.1364/OE.5...

New paper on multi-core hollow-core fibres! 🎉 We show a fibre with low inter-core coupling, achieving optical losses as low as 0.03 dB/m (620 nm) & 0.08 dB/m (1000 nm). Also Robbie’s 2nd first-author paper of his PhD! arxiv.org/abs/2409.14555 #photonics #fiberoptics #research

Made at the University of Bath: Optical fibres fit for the age of quantum computing A new generation of specialty optical fibres has been developed by physicists at Bath to cope with the data transfer challenges expected from quantum computing.

Could microstructured hollow core fibres meet the diverse needs of #quantum sources and networks? We think so! 📈 Explore our findings in our press release: bath.ac.uk/announcement... or the paper directly pubs.aip.org/aip/apq/arti... #physics #research

I hope you read about our work & I look forward to any questions or suggestions for future work with this fibre. The question session of a talk is always the most fun part, never quite present in papers

Our #opticalfiber guides most of the UV. Most excitingly, it reaches the shortest wavelength we can test without purging (air is a problem towards 180 nm). For a fibre of these long lengths, this is brand new! We hope this work will enable many transformative UV technologies

Despite this challenge, we managed to fabricate beautiful, long lengths of #DUV guiding optical fibre, important for our
@uCare_EPSRC collaborators who wish to precisely guide #deepUV light for transformative healthcare technologies.

HCFs for UV need to have VERY thin glass structures, which makes them difficult to fabricate. We are essentially making very long glass bubbles in a 2000degree furnace, and hoping to make perfect, symmetrical tubular walls of a few 100 #nanometers thick! It is a challenge!

ormal optical fibres (with glass in the core) are limited at short #UV wavelengths, as they have high attenuation and also darken with exposure over time. #HollowCoreFibers (HCF), being hollow in the core, do not have this problem, as shown in graph from prev UV HCF Bath paper:
