Here is a lovely profile we ran of Giles back in 2014 - he was such an interesting guy too, and lectured in art history before (as he put it back then but I wouldn't now!) having "the world's dullest mid life crisis" and switching to a career in housing law

This is taking a huge toll on residents from an ethnic minority or immigrant background, but also on housing staff as well, who are increasingly having to navigate very difficult conversations
On one level this is nothing new - I took my driving test shortly after I started covering social housing, and the examiner spent the whole test going on at me about immigrants being "given" all the social housing even then (I failed my test!) But social media really seems to have exacerbated this
This week we ran an exclusive survey on the level of misinformation which is circulating in the country about immigration and social housing allocations, and it is a doozy: www.insidehousing.co.uk/insight/your...
I had a moment of realising quite how middle aged I am when I saw these in the park and thought “but must they litter too”
The choice of what is the most likely correct next word is the antithesis of writing, which is the ideosyncratic assembly of words and their associated meanings into a whole that could not have been assembled by anyone other than it's author. Expression is one of the most magical thing we have.
This is properly fascinating, not least the demographic bit - if you put in your details in the build a voter tool you can see how common (literally) someone like you really is.
In my mid teens if someone had said to me “when you are middle aged, the leader of the opposition is a black woman and the leader of the party polling in third is Jewish”, I really would have had a much more optimistic idea of how the future was panning out.
Green Party candidate for Lambeth shares a poster: "I want YOU to die for Israel - because I'm owned by Jews"
Green Party candidate for Lambeth shares picture of goblin-like Jewish caricature crying. Caption reads: "Don't you know the rules?? We went through the Holocaust and now we get to kill everyone, forever!!"
Green Party council candidate in Lambeth.
In a normal world, it would not be sustainable for a Party which claims to be "anti-racist" to ignore this, or to try and punt it away by telling everyone that everything is ok because Zack Polanski is Jewish

I’m so lucky to work with such talented people - wonderful to see three of our reporting team shortlisted in the BSMEs, and our excellent production team
Wow:
"you can’t catch a virus”
“Flu shots don’t prevent flu they give you the flu… it’s all big pharma lies and business”
I watched this for the first time in RS class at secondary school. I'm sure the teacher had just given up on us that day, but in retrospect it should be on the curriculum
Quite a flex to turn up at the presidential palace, get him to confirm you as prime minister, call him unfit to serve with no moral authority, tell him to resign, and then pose for a picture
Oh to be offline enough to find that baffling
Another one
Bournville Village Trust's gender pay gap dropped more than 14 percentage points, and it puts it down to a decision to close its nursing home and care service. Care jobs - women mostly do them, they're poorly paid

Our finance-focused sister publication has done a deep dive into the gender pay gap numbers for housing associations, including some great tables (and one table I'm pretty sure I don't understand). The really depressing take away: an org gets out of care provision, the gap closes
This piece from 2012 focuses on women who worked at lads' mags in the "noughties", and is worth a read to really understand what it was like..

I think people forget how gross and misogynist it was in the 90s in particular, and also the rampant homophobia. Obviously it wasn't all bad and some things are worse now (cost of living), but loads of other things we've just absorbed the improvements into the status quo and forgotten
Yes, it was an absolute shit show

At least with the transport museum you get a year’s entry, some of these are just objectively too expensive
I agree, and support the reduced rates, but also the fact that going to the zoo or the Tower of London costs this much now is completely insane
For the first time ever, heat pumps outsold gas boilers in Germany in 2025.
48% of all new heating systems installed last year were heat pumps. Gas fell to just 39%. A decade ago, heat pumps had a 7% market share. The transformation has been remarkable.
I can’t believe I missed the news they caught the third alleged ambulance arsonist … when he turned up at the court appearance of the other two alleged arsonists www.thejc.com/news/uk/hatz...
How do you even react to this stuff anymore it’s bonkers
