New episode: @annabull.bsky.social joins The Sexual Violence Research podcast to explore rates of #GBV in higher ed settings.
"One of the reasons for this being seemingly so prevalent..is the lack of professional boundaries between staff & students."

Here's my take on new data on sexual violence and harassment released today from England's Office for Students.

After the Noel Clarke judgement last month it's a good time to sign this anti SLAPP petition if you're UK based: www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/st...
Several English universities have introduced partial bans on staff-student relationships ahead of new regulations coming into force today, while Liverpool and Southampton have said that they will ‘discourage’, rather than prohibit, staff-student relationships
Me for @timeshighered.bsky.social
Really good piece by @annabull.bsky.social on how universities should respond to the EHRC's proposed segregation programme. The evidence points to trans people's heightened vulnerability to sexual harassment and violence - so single-sex policies must account for this.
I wrote something that is especially relevant for UK HE people just now.

The recording of the launch event will be available very soon!
Thanks Luke, it was fantastic to get your input into the toolkit at draft stage. And really great to hear about some good practice in the launch - recording will be available very soon!
Very proud to announce the publication of Gender-Based Violence in Arts and Culture, I co-edited with Marie Buscatto and Sari Karttunen 🤓 With I. Roharik, S. Helbert, Chiharu Chujo, @leena-maija.bsky.social , @annabull.bsky.social , Bleuwenn Lechaux, Alice Laurent-Camena, and @paulita.bsky.social
I'm delighted to have a chapter in this new book, about experiences of film and TV industry workers who were experiencing sexual harassment/violence in the workplace, at the same time as creating content about gender-based violence or sexuality.
Check out the other fantastic chapters also!

Gender inequalities in UK music higher education: the role of institutional stratification
By @annabull.bsky.social Huge congrats!

Solidarity... onwards and upwards.
- At the PGT level, gender inequalities vary across institution types.
- Among postgraduate researchers, women remain under-represented.
But there are things we can do! Eg programmes to support women and non-binary people into PhDs; making music technology mandatory for all UG programmes...
Key findings:
- Older, more prestigious institutions have a more equal gender balance.
- Women of colour and working-class women are doubly marginalised: excluded from prestigious HEIs where white, middle-class women predominate, and from newer HEIs where men are over-represented.
In creative higher education (HE) undergraduate courses in the UK, women students are over-represented by a proportion of two-to-one. However, music HE shows almost the reverse gender balance.
This article uses data on all students in UK music HE between 2016 and 2020.
It comes out of the 'Slow Train Coming' report:
Bull, Anna. 2025. ‘Gender Inequalities in UK Music Higher Education: The Role of Institutional Stratification’. British Journal of Sociology of Education.
Open access copies here: www.tandfonline.com/eprint/ZYH2B...
The picture for gender equality in the UK music industry is GRIM.
If you look at the pipeline of gender equality in music higher education, we are moving away from gender equality rather than closer to it.
I've written about this in a new academic article.
Reminder that this is on the agenda at UCU Congress this coming weekend

The perseverance and courage of UCU activists in taking forward this motion to address staff-student intimate relationships is so important.
Read this thread to see why.
YES! This is the problem with policies requiring only disclosure of staff-student relationships.
The launch event will hear from myself giving an overview of the toolkit, as well as Rachel Arnold, PGR Director at University of Bath, as well as Sahana Arun Kumar, a postgraduate researcher at University of York. All welcome.
The toolkit will outline what higher education institutions need to do to fulfil the new regulatory conditions from the Office for Students, as well as broader approaches to address this issue. It's got HEAPS of useful resources including good practice examples and a table with action points.
Do you want to learn about the toolkit for addressing harassment and sexual misconduct experienced by postgraduate researchers that I've been working on with Kelly Prince on behalf of @the1752group.bsky.social ?

Just out! Our peer-reviewed critique of the Cass Review has been published by BMC Medical Research Methodology. Please read and share. We show that the Cass Review is fatally flawed and should not be the basis for policy or practice in transgender healthcare.
