What a lovely nb-baby! π
thoodleoo: "yknow it's a real shame that romans didn't have access to australia specifically for augury reasons. i really wish i could have seen a roman augur have to deal with australian birds. like imagine trying to properly interpret an omen from a fuckin. cassowary" thoodleoo: "loving that the general consensus here is that "the omen when you see a cassowary is that you are about to die of cassowary""
A product photo of a woman posing in a knee-length casual cotton dress, pale pink, with a kaleidoscopic pattern of blackbirds in flight.
Hah, you're gonna love my blackbird dress even more; it's by a local designer from our city (MUKA/VA), and I *adore* it.
Anne, I am so stoked about this, I need to sign up for more promo podcasts to show off all the bird-themed clothing I've been accumulating over the last year.

Oooh, that's cool! Love the old-school editing tricks. I write in Obsidian (markdown) nowadays, so I just chuck TK content into [] brackets, and the software automatically formats it with different color (because it thinks it's code), so it's super easy to find visually π₯
Birds! π
100% relatable.
A card with an illustration of a black bird and a quest idea: "A mining town in a secluded mountain valley endures a self-inflicted tragedy. Defying the local legend of blackbirds bringing dusk and dawn with their calls, a drunk miner threw a stone at a flock not long ago, scaring the birds away - and with them, the rising sun. Drowned in darkness for days, the denizens are desperate for aid in bringing the sacred flock back."
A card with an illustration of a black bird-of-paradise and a quest idea: "A typically quaint settlement changed beyond recognition as a new trend took hold. A local priest promised the townsfolk a sign from the gods, and - just as they prophesied - a pair of colorful birds made a home in the temple's altar. The birds became the de facto government, as the people place offering bowls along with notes and prayers in front of the birds, and follow the "advice" of whichever note they choose.

A card with an illustration of a bee-eater and a quest idea: "A colorful bird buzzes back and forth, clearly trying to convince you to follow it someplace. Tempted, you sentenced yourself to a dredge through dense shrubs deep into a forest. Your dedication was rewarded when the bee-eater stopped just short of a massive, gilded chest. Sounds of knocking and hushed cried for help come from beneath the bejeweled lid."
I concur! π

If you're doomscrolling, guess what? So far there are 51 kΔkΔpΕ chicks hatched and thriving this season, the same number of birds as we had in TOTAL in the 90s! Only one chick has died and there are still fertile eggs waiting to hatch!
A miniature of Tragopalas, described as a kind of hornbill, in a Middle Dutch encyclopedia of nature by Jacob van Maerlant. The picture shows a pissed-off bird, wings at his hips, and two antler-like horns growing out of its head.
Have the confidence of the medieval scribe claiming they know what a hornbill is.
A card with an illustration of an albatross and a quest idea: "A storm ravaging the countryside persists days longer than usual this time of year. Entrusted with the task of finding out whether the cataclysm has unnatural origins, you discover a lone giant albatross crying out in the eye of the maelstrom. Endowed with the power of speech, the bird agrees to leave and take the storm with it, if you help it find its missing partner."

Picture of the flowers on a pearl tree blooming.
A most welcome sign of spring approaching.

When someone says βScientists do not want you to knowβ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They canβt shut up about what they found out and want you to know.
This is who runs this account.
Keeping myself together by rendering tail feathers. Not much else works anymore π
Anyway, we're about to kick off a big marketing thing π¦ in the coming days; I apologize in advance.
Our Natural World Library (Herbalist's Primer and later volumes) is exactly that! Maybe we too should get in touch with the organizers :)
Thank you for sharing!
Black and white photo of Marjane Satrapi with the quote: "The world is not divided between East and West. You are American. I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same."
Once again.
