#gingerplantoftheweek is #marantaceae #Calathea (currently placed in #Goeppertia but is it correct?) inocephala that has a white, oil-rich elaiosome below the bluish seeds facilitating ant dispersal. #neotropicalplants
Zingiber not Etlingera
Cheilocostus speciosus
Etlingera pyramidosphaera
This is the neotropical #Costus comosus var. bakeri (#Costaceae; leaves arranged in a ‘spiral staircase’) whereas #Etlingera belongs to the family #Zingiberaceae where the leaves typically are distichous.
Where did you take this photograph?
Etlingera megalocheilos
Do you agree that ‘flame ginger’ is a good English name for these neat-ground flowering species of Etlingera?
#gingerplantoftheweek is #Etlingera hemisphaerica #etlingerahemisphaerica described by Carl Ludwig von Blume in 1827 and native in the #FloraOfJava. This particular plant was flowering in the campus of University of Indonesia, Fakultas MIPA, Java.
E. corneri named in honour of British botanist, Edred J. H. Corner (1906–1996).
