Walked past the old post office building yesterday, across from Union Station, and was struck by the inscription (which I’d somehow never noticed):
“Messenger of sympathy and love /
Servant of parted friends /
Consoler of the lonely /
Bond of the scattered family /
Enlarger of the common life.”

Would be super interested to read young Mr. Calhoun’s bench brief on unauthorized practice of law in Alabama.
After almost twenty years on the platform, EFF is logging off of X.
This isn’t a decision we made lightly, but it might be overdue. 🧵 (1/5)

Why is MTG speaking with greater moral clarity on this crisis than you are?

New: I wrote about how the SPLC let union breaking and fear of MAGA drive it away from its own civil rights principles.
After I spoke up about Gaza, the SPLC disciplined me and terminated my employment—leading to a discrimination settlement: substack.com/home/post/p-...
Some fascinating stuff in this Batson opinion . . . including the appellate court noting that a prospective juror's hesitation when asked if they can be "fair" and "impartial" is actually the mark of a good juror, not a basis to strike.
Pre-ordered! Congrats and can't wait to read it.
You think it's bad here?
This Reddit post is formatted like a joke but it’s actually a very dry recitation - at times, direct quotes - of America’s public war strategy over the last month. This can’t go on. This is deranged. Impeach and imprison.
At first I thought the exclamation points were a subtle dig at Judge Leon's, uh, distinctive style. But when you read it it's clear they let Trump co-author this, right? The distinctive capitalizations and asides? But also, the shame belongs to the person who signed it:
"The workaround could face legal scrutiny . . ." is a heckuva way to start the ninth paragraph of an article about the functional abolition of one branch of government.
Not my field, but 95% sure it doesn’t matter. If they’re part of a state’s armed forces and captured by another state, they’re a POW.
ME: look, a lot went into this set of compensation options. housing. transportation. I'm hoping we can finally end negotiations here - no? God...do you at least have a reasonable counter demand I can actually provide?

What does it look like when the government violates court orders in 300 separate immigration habeas cases?
@katherinepomps.bsky.social and @benjaminwittes.lawfaremedia.org announce a new database which tracks government non-compliance with court orders around the country.

Reaffirming GW's Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion G THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY WASHINGTON, DC Dear Members of the George Washington University Community, At the George Washington University, our mission is rooted in the belief that higher education must prepare students to engage thoughtfully in a world of complex differences. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not abstract ideals for our community - they are foundational principles that shape how we teach, learn, conduct research, and serve society. As the university's most senior academic officer and most senior diversity officer, and with the full endorsement and support of the President and the university leadership team, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing these values across every dimension of the university consistent with the law.
I’ve got plenty of issues with how “DEI” initiatives play out in universities and corporate America—and obviously policies matter more than these general statements—but it’s REALLY nice to read something like this right now.
And "no name-changes" SecDef29 now prefers to be called SecWar29.
Honor Code violation.
Props to my afternoon #legalwriting students—who managed a very simple, but effective April Fool’s Day prank: precisely swapping their regular seats two that the entire classroom was a mirror image of the normal arrangement.
It messed with my brain way more than I could have expected.
Interestingly, KJB made the same move yesterday in a Batson case (Pitchford v. Cain) where I think (hope?) that's what Kavanaugh wanted to hear.
Wild that a federal judge scolds a group of Jewish Intervenors concerned about "lists of Jews" for "unfortunate" and "counterproductive" analogies to past antisemitic regimes . . . and today Trump's at SCOTUS asking to strip citizenship & create a stateless people out of a disfavored minority group.
Ahh, thanks Judge Pappert, will definitely tone down my rhetoric knowing that it's a "list of Jews TO PROTECT" that the Trump Administration wants to compile.

Last week's PA Supreme Court ruling that the state constitution bars mandatory life w/o parole for ppl convicted of felony murder is notable for many reasons, writes @nusl.bsky.social's Martha Davis, including the ways that international law was baked into the arguments and the justices’ opinions.
The full dissent from denial of cert is here:

As Justices Sotomayor & Jackson note in their dissent from the denial of cert, the Louisiana courts are basically in "open defiance" of the U.S. Supreme Court when it comes to Brady v. Maryland.
(They cited my amicus brief for the point, which you can read here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....).
