Anyway I really want to re commit myself to becoming fluent as I feel it’s a small way of gaining back something from colonization. To all the PR kids in the US who don’t speak and are insecure about it- we aren’t alone in that feeling 🇵🇷❤️
My mom often chastised me for not knowing it, which gave me a complex about learning it, and made me insecure about speaking with her. Surprisingly though, I have picked up more over the years than I thought and can understand more now than I ever have before especially reading it.
It’s been oddly comforting to know that i’m not the only child born in the states (with a Puerto Rican parent), who doesn’t speak Spanish. My mom was the bread winner in our family and so she didn’t have time to teach me. I’m also the youngest of 4 children.
