Second butterfly was (I think) an eastern comma. Didn’t get a good look. Saw it and the mourning cloak on a walk in the nearby Northumberland Forest.

"In an election with two choices, you should vote for the better one" is a full & complete case, absolutely logically airtight & in need of no additional facts or arguments. Refusing to acknowledge it is de facto evidence that you're a fucking poser looking for attention. There's no argument here!

A rare twofer day for me. First, the Hamilton Fishway story (below), then @cangeo.bsky.social published a storymap piece I wrote on wildlife crossings for their Rights of Passage series. storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/d7e8.... (Fish and crossings, a @bengoldfarb.bsky.social kind of day.)

Hamilton Fishway’s simple method of controlling invasive carp The success of a simple idea at Cootes Paradise Marsh has since inspired a string of new carp-exclusion systems across the country

My first piece for Be Giant, Canada's newest digital media venture, took me to Cootes Paradise Marsh in Hamilton to investigate how the Hamilton Fishway keeps invasive carp out of the 300-hectare wetland, making rehab possible and helping native species thrive. www.begiant.ca/stories/plac...

@irishrainforest.bsky.social is spot on. Deadfall and standing snags are *vital*. The whole ecosystem of forests in particular depends on the slime moulds, fungi, beetle larvae, etc that live off the deadfall pictured below in the OP

Canadiens take game 1. I’m firmly on their bandwagon. Riding it all the way to a Cup final.

Two page opening magazine spread showing a humpback whale breaching. Text reads: Naming the Giants: Once hunted to near-extinction, humpback whales have returned to B.C.'s coast in increasing numbers since the early 2000s. In 2010, five women co-founded the Marine Education & Research Society on Vancouver Island to study their recovery and promote whale conservation and boater safety. They want you to know every humpback by name.

New issue of Canadian Wildlife magazine (@cwf-fcf.bsky.social) out today. It's subscribers only, but here's the opening spread of my feature on the return of humpback whales and the vital work of B.C.'s Marine Education & Research Society (@mersociety.bsky.social), two stories that are intertwined.

The Texas Rangers have unveiled a controversial new statue modeled after Jay Banks, a former Texas law enforcement officer known for enforcing school segregation.

The unveiling preceded the MLB’s celebration of Jackie Robinson Day, which commemorates the first African American MLB player.

Geez, sounds like a boat crash I was in as a kid. In our case, it was a small outboard, hitting our boat on the left bow and going airborne right over us. I dove to the floor just in time; my father, driving our boat, was saved by the windshield frame, suffering only a blow on his forehead.

Brown-grey American toad seen from above, sitting on brown leaf litter.

First American toad sighting of 2026! Just a wee guy. Found him in the doorway of a “shed” that’s in the corner of the house as I was getting out my bike (also a first for 2026!). Moved it out of harm’s way.
