“A funny thing happened on the way to education”: A line drawing of a suited person with a file box for a head, holding a suitcase labeled “state” overstuffed with money. They are raising a dagger called “tuition,” standing behind a student who has already been stabbed by daggers called “insurance,” “subway,” and “rent.” The student has a paper sticking out of their front pocket that says CUNY BILL and their mouth is open in shock/pain. Caption says “Student: Et tu Cuomé?”

Hey friends -

Who's been doing non-traditional humanities dissertations in the past ~5 years?

Tons of fabulous resources from ~2021 and before, but wondering what cool people have been doing lately. References? Links? Exploring new options for our department.

Here in NYS, I think public institutions need to see if state guidance changes, since we also have local mandates coming down...

In the meantime, here is the online version of the Federal Register's ADA Title II compliance extension

I think USians need to find ways to grieve what's happening in the U.S. without reproducing imperial logics that the U.S. is "losing a position as the world superpower" or "as the leader in science" or "as the leader in research" or "as the leader in . . . "

Mamdani Allies Want Veto for Protest ‘Buffer Zone’ Bill A bill keeping demonstrators away from houses of worship is veto-proof, but critics want the mayor to reject a similar measure targeting educational facilities.

Labor and other allies of Mayor Zohran Mamdani are urging him to veto one of two City Council bills aimed at restricting protests around educational facilities, saying the “radical overreach” of the bill limits free speech and endangers New Yorkers.

Last night on Kanopy, I watched Birth of a Movement (2017). Directed by Bestor Cram and Susan Gray, the #documentary is on 1915 protests led by Black newspaper editor and activist William Monroe Trotter against film The Birth of a Nation. The doc is also on YouTube. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birth_o...

This report is going on about "institutional barriers to establishing a uniform standard of care for students through the use of academic technology" and I'm sorry but trying to frame edtech as care is the wrong premise, wrong approach, wrong strategy

If I say academic technology and you say Coursedog, we are not speaking the same language.

All of this. And I would add that it's good and right to teach academic style. This is the language of the evidence brought to bear in your argument, like learning how to reference a piece of legislation or craft a postal address. It is learning how to function in a world and a skill worth learning.

It seems the solution is a unified ~student success dashboard~ "with integrated data (potentially AI) for interventions." Magic sauce!

Or, perhaps students would be horrified to see themselves in such a dashboard, to know that their uni is tracking them like widgets in a factory. Alas.

This is the same university that decided to migrate student emails over spring break. In April.

Breaking email. In the middle of the semester. Right before graduation. 🙃

I'm reading a university report that begins, "According to EAB," and I need the world to understand that this is like saying "According to Microsoft," to introduce your ideas about teaching and learning
