To be clear I aim to arrive at the airport just in time to not be in a rush, but no earlier. That usually ends up around 90 minutes for a flight with no carry on luggage at a decent airport! But I can understand why people make different calculations.

I think my free time is worth at least as much as minimum wage - which is revealed by the fact I’m not taking on extra part-time jobs for more cash. I value it more highly than that and probably should spend more to free up my time than I do right now.

Time is money too. If you value your time at $20/hr and take 4 return flights a year, then leaving an extra hour early for each one costs about the same.

That being said I’ve never missed a flight, my aim is usually to show up just early enough that outside of catastrophic transport delays I’m fine

Covid hit in the first year of my PhD, I still feel like it absolutely shafted me in a number of ways - no in-person meetings when I really needed supervision, a bunch of summer schools I had lined up got cancelled, lack of conferences = loss of networking, etc...

For rather understandable reasons, social media perspectives on peak Covid tend to get skewed towards people who don’t like leaving the house all that much, so figure I should represent the “leaving the house and having parties is my favorite thing to do” perspective

my edgy Covid take is that I while I did socially isolate until vaccines came online for the good of society, I absolutely loathed being unable to see people in person, throw a party, or travel for over a year, and I enjoyed absolutely nothing whatsoever about any of it
