Just wrapped an incredible fieldwork week at Finse with @kwvollset.bsky.social 🎣 Fieldwork thread 🧵 (1/5)
PhD candidate Jessica Robichaud at Cooke lab at @carleton.ca is visiting us for a month to help with field work. Today, she presented her work for our lab. She is using acoustic telemetry to track permit in the Florida keys! So interesting to see some of her findings! 🐟

Tagging of Mustelus asterias
What a week it’s been! I’ve visited @lottepohl.bsky.social & David Casals at @vliz.be in Belgium for our #EMFish project. My first time seeing and tagging a Mustelus asterias - so cool! Thanks for a very fun day on the North Sea!

New paper 🚨 Do pathogens predict salmon survival? In our recently published study on the Endangered Atlantic salmon, we combined acoustic telemetry with pathogen and gene expression profiles. Read the paper here

We’ve downloaded data from our receivers around Bergen city center for the #BOATS project. Interested to see an example of fine-scale positioning movement data from a tagged European lobster? Check out the BTN website here www.bergentelemetry.com/post/downloa...
We are now starting the second part of the #NFR_HITLICE project on Senja, Northern Norway, where we infect migrating salmon smolts with salmon lice and tag them with acoustic transmitters with predation sensors to investigate the vulnerability to predation 🐟
Beautiful day in field earlier this week deploying receivers in the fjords around Bergen city☀️ These will track some fascinating species that we’re going to tag through some new projects starting this year 🌊🦈🐠

Anchoring of the PIT antenna to the riverbed during low river discharge
Picture of the river Nidelva in Southern Norway with NORCE LFI employee snorkeling to make sure that the antenna is well secured and deployed
We've installed a PIT antenna in Nidelva to track returning Atlantic salmon smolts tagged last year through our #NFR_HITLice project. Smolts were infested with sea lice before release. Low discharge makes drilling the antenna to the riverbed easier, still a river with 3–4°C makes it quite tough!
🚨 New project 🚨 @saveourseas.bsky.social is funding our #SOSF_GhostTrack project - we’re tracking ghost sharks, Chimaera monstrosa, around Bergen city! Read more here: www.bergentelemetry.com/post/excitin...

Dean Grubbs is visiting our lab and will holding a guest lecture at Univerisity of Bergen. Stop by if you happen to be in Bergen.
Interested in predator-prey dynamics & habitat restoration? Check out our new review paper🚨 We discuss the importance of habitat complexity as a refuge, for phenotype variation, energetic costs, & apparent competition - and their implications for restoration.

De siste tre dagene har det nyoppnevnte Vitenskapsrådet vært samlet på Meråker. 11 medlemmer ble oppnevnt på nytt, og tre nye forskere tar fatt på arbeidet sammen med dem. #villaks

We spent the last field days in December retrieving receivers for our eel project in Storelva in southern Norway. All found, none lost! Looking forward to starting 2025 digging into the data✨

Manuscripts drafted and written, revisions done, application sent in, and we even had a GAM crash course - safe to say we can call the third year of writing retreat a success! ❄️
🗯️ #Angling 🎣 increases pike timidity and lure avoidance, potentially reducing catch rates 🐟. Our latest study in #Fisheries Management and #Ecology explores these effects and their implications for management strategies. #Fish
Paneled figure depicting a) the probability of a viral pathogen PRV detection in Atlantic salmon on salmon farms reaching nearly 100% the longer fish were on farm conditions b) the proportion of PRV positive chinook salmon in relation to distance to an active aquaculture site with PRV fish being more likely to detect closer to aquaculture and c) the global transmission of PRV from Norway and Iceland to British Columbia and Chile.
Recently out in Science Advances, we compiled and reviewed the evidence surrounding pathogens from salmon aquaculture and their risk to wild Pacific salmon in British Columbia. We highlight pathogen impacts in relation to climate change, evolution & management

🪶 Less than a month after those dams have come down in the largest dam removal project in US history, salmon are once more returning to spawn in creeks that have been cut off to them for generations.Video shows that hundreds of salmon have made it to tributaries.
