12 Must-Read Books of April 2026 - Chicago Review of Books It’s no prank: April is officially here and so are the spring-time books! This month features some of my favorite debuts of the year, a deeply moving anthology about estrangement, and a book that…

NO CONTACT is a must-read according to @chicagorevbooks.bsky.social!

"NO CONTACT is radically vulnerable and truly soaring in its compassion, as well as a powerful reminder that we are never truly alone."

What I Hope My Daughter Learns From My Decision to Cut Ties With My Mother Our estrangement began on Mother’s Day when I was 14. Every year, the holiday is both sad and triumphant.

It is a tremendous honor to have one of my essays published by Oprah Daily! Thank you to Books Editor, Charley Burlock. The full essay is included in No Contact: Writers on Estrangement, edited by @jennybartoy.bsky.social, published by @catapultbooks.bsky.social. www.oprahdaily.com/life/wholene...

Who Can Imagine Why Anyone Would Want To Cut This Lovely Mom Out Of Her Life? | Defector Laura Wellington is estranged from one of her adult daughters. The Connecticut 59-year-old is somewhat famous for this, in fact, or anyway famous for her response to it. Across Tiktok and Instagram, u...

It's been my personal anecdotal experience that people who have gone no contact with a parent usually have done so for good reason, and that re-establishing contact on the parent's terms would do both parties more harm than good.

No Contact

Estrangement is the subject of my forthcoming anthology, NO CONTACT (Catapult, 2026). The current discourse is exactly why this book and its stories are needed. We must consider family estrangement with more nuance and compassion.

Estrangement is not a trend. Estrangement has always existed, along with the abuse and toxic families that necessitate it. But we're *talking* about it now — that's the change! Thanks to the internet and the destigmatization of therapy, we now find support in #estrangement. This has/will save lives.

i firmly believe one of the main messages we should be telling our students about this whole thing is that generative ‘AI’ by definition will *never* have an original idea,
and if you use it, neither will *you*

The reason there's no working class representation in publishing is because publishing and writing currently pay so badly only people who are already financially stable can afford to do it.
The problem is always, always money.
