He just got back to me. Here's the reply!
Essentially: if I were able to discern a count whatsoever, then I should. Otherwise, marking them as present is fine. It gives less precise data, but this station gives much more data than can be collected by a single present birder, or even a dozen!
That being said, I am going to check with my eBird Reviewer. He suggested I make the Monitoring account, but if he thinks different and I can make educated guesses, that would make this work a lot easier (but in my opinion, less reliable).
but I'd love it more to not give numbers I know for a fact are going to, more-often-than-not, be wildly inaccurate. Maybe I could do the math on the average number of Carolina Wren calls per hour per individual, but I'm just one person and the recording I do already takes so much of my time as is. 😭

With that exceptional degree of uncertainty, counting individuals becomes less of an educated estimate and more of a "eh I like this number today" type situation. Thank you for the question! You are correct that X gives different data than a number, but that data isn't totally nullified. It still helps with tracking what species are present at what locations at what times of the year. The data I get from the remote station is unreliable, especially the (1/2)
2014-2016 has 10 total Barred #Owl detections, with these being the duets! They're becoming much more active leading up to breeding season!
