I'm a guy. I quit riding my road bike bc I MTB. It's much better without all the cars. I simply don't trust cars. I see people out in traffic and it makes me cringe. I have a classic road bike from 1999.

I would also prefer a highly protected area to ride my bike if I'm on the street.

It largely depends on where it's located. Some areas do some don't. If it's a city area they do that to ensure you have parking otherwise, if they didn't charge for parking, then others would park there and then you would have no parking.
