Every time Jersey City or Hoboken proposes a pedestrian plaza or bike lane, local businesses fear it'll destroy them. The data says the opposite. 🧵

"Hi, I've been getting away with insurance fraud for years. Why am I now being held accountable?"
Police departments across the state have been chomping at the bit to enforce these laws.
It finally allows them to do ID checks on random cyclists like they do with drivers.
Fortunately, that's not too big of a deal, because very few people ever travel across state lines into NJ.
The NJ MVC is AIMING to allow e-bike registration by JULY 1ST?!
So, their HOPE is that people will be able to START registering their bikes just 12 business days before enforcement begins?
This rollout is going to be a complete disaster.

This is a fantastic and direct illustration of how much energy it takes to power cars. Especially considering EVs are 5x as efficient as ICE.
Imagine what a "gas station" would look like if it had to produce the energy it dispenses locally.
Dozens of more projects like this are in the pipeline, directly thanks to Congestion Relief Pricing.
Drivers vs non-drivers might have a cleaner skew.
ahh, I missed the royal fork.

I guess we’re posting Costco bike trips.
The “bike industry” in NJ had already passed laws in 2019 effectively banning “e-motos” and class-3 e-bikes.
The state just failed to enforce those laws.
You’re not the first one to be fooled by this. 🙃
But I’m glad the commute works well! The PATH just recently began service upgrades to make commutes much better. You have great timing!
Important note: that taco shop is not Los Tacos No.1. It’s a knockoff owned by a local pizzeria.

@mikiesherrill.bsky.social should work with her long-time friend @abigailspanberger.com to bring this to NJ. Reducing utility bills is a cornerstone of her platform and this would be a step in the right direction.
Excuse me, the charging port is for a string of fairy lights inside the Storm Shield, not for cell phones. 😁
What is maintenance like for an EV compared to an ICE vehicle?
You no longer need regular oil changes, but there are still necessary coolant flushes, suspension checks, brake checks, etc. How should owners best manage these less common service intervals, especially for brands w/o dealer networks?
#Hoboken Mayor @hobokenemily.bsky.social launches community-driven update to Hoboken’s Vision Zero Action Plan, reestablishes task force, and advances accessibility for persons with disabilities.

In Hoboken, our Parking Utility issues tickets and are organized under our Transportation & Parking Department.
It’s a bit confusing for residents trying to escalate urgent issues, but it’s a much better division of labor than having the PD try to manage it.

Oh c’mon, you’re complete ignoring the incredibly safe and generous SHARE THE ROAD sign.
And... the NJ MVC still requires a VIN to make an appointment.
No VIN number exists on my pedal assist bike so, as of now, it remains impossible for me to comply with the new e-bike registration law.
So getting insurance is tough, but let me go ahead to Step 2 and schedule my MVC registration appointment:
I’m beginning to wonder if, rather than having registration, I’ll just be carrying around proof of MVC rejection documents instead!
Interesting to know!
Well, yeah, it's been passed. State reps are working on curative legislation in the new session.
For context, this is for my 1/3 HP, 20mph, pedal assist bicycle.
Only 2.5x that price will get me a similar level of liability insurance for a 1,000 HP, 9700 lb, 2025 GMC Hummer EV.
The Velosurance quote for me to comply with this law with bare minimum coverage for just one of my bikes is $453/yr.

I think many of them expected the normal crowd of "e-bike people" to be upset about it, but I don't think they were prepared to have every bike shop owner, manufacturer and insurance company join the onslaught.
There's wide agreement that, at a minimum, a massive amendment is absolutely necessary.
